What a nice surprise

... handstands and all the rest.... spend hours cleaning the sand out of our bags and clothes! The next day was a stunning 26 degree day.. so so so nice. We never thought we would be at the beach again. Were tempted to stay but found out the next 2 days were not going to be great weather. Sadly we headed off at 4pm to head to Avignon.. Saying goodbye to the med forever was very hard.. and sad....

Rained out of Porquerolles

  • Because of the bad weather, we missed our scheduled visit to Ile du Porquerolles and Ile du Levant. We were going to pull out the water toys and get some more time on the beach, but it didn't happen. Hopefully on my next visit to the Med, I’ll be able to see both of these islands.

    Side trip to Frejus

... aqueduct system and you could see at least 5 or 6 of them, showing the route that the aqueduct took, as well as being able to see the channel that was at the top in which the water flowed from the source (presumably near the mountains) to the destination (presumably the middle of town). I have uploaded some pictures from that here.

From there, we went back to Toulon, walked around a bit, and plan to sample some local cuisine for dinner. Tomorrow - Nice!

... have caves in town where one can sample the wares and buy what you want. We stopped into 3 different places and had to leave before we spent any more on wine. The first one, Domaine du Pegau, was held down by a proprietor who didn't speak English, only a smattering of Spanish. In fact, it was a bit confusing as he mixed his French and Spanish in trying to communicate with us. He told us the 2004 and 2006 vintages were very good, but the 2003 and ...

Notre Dame de la Garde and Cassis

... br>So now it's evening and we're driving to a small but popular town Cassis. It's on the way to Les Lecques.
Nobody can say why Cassis is so popular, there is no famous monument there or something.. It's just a fun place to go! There is a big Casino there, and plenty of little cafes and restaurants, it's a nice place to take a long walk too.

    A day trip to Marseilles

We took a day trip to Marseilles which is a pretty dirty, ugly city apart from its fabulous port. We didn't feel particularly safe there, and were walking through clutching our bags so people wouldn't pick pocket. At one point we went past a big group of men and I tightened my grip on my purse, as usual. Nicci and I were busy looking at a guy with really long dreadlocks, but Andrew said after they passed that we should have diverted our ...

    Aix- at Last

... I figured out, at last, what a Plane tree is. MFK wrote often about these trees and Aix is filled with Sycamores. I think this is what she meant. They are all trained to go two to three stories high before leafing out. The city is full of them (and they are my favorite trees- after Weeping Willows, Birch and of course, my failed attempts at Chestnuts). The mottled trunks rise up and are full of texture and shade- the trunks are huge, some easily five feet around, and ...

... Nice. it was awesome, and the first time I had ever been in the ocean. Nice was actually the first place I had seen the ocean, and its actually a sea. the cliff jumping was wicked. the second day it was a little scarier b/c the wind picked up and the water was choppy and me and this other girl had trouble getting outta the water, our hands and legs were cut and bleeding and it was kinda scary, but it was still worth ...
