Historical Traveler Reviews Marlborough House Bath

Quirky and cheerful

from PPK2008

With a budget of about £70 per night, we chose the Marlborough House Hotel because fo it's central location and value for money. The American owners are very welcoming and treat you to a brief local history/geography lesson on your arrival so you can get your bearings. The room, fitted with four poster bed, was really lovely and you can have breakfast delivered if you wish. Speaking of breakfast, it's a vegetarian hotel so if you're looking forward to a full English each morning you'll be dissappointed. This is not made clear on the website and while the alternative brekkie offered is healthy and wholesome, it wasn't quite what I was looking forward to.

Cosy & fun

from dixiegirl23

Malborough House was a cozy, welcoming place to spend a few days in Bath. Owners were helpful, made dinner reservations for us one night and provided an early breakfast when we had to leave for a tour before regular breakfast hours. Our room was comfortable and clean. Overall, a good value for money!

Friendly, welcoming and different

from CTDevon

We stayed here for 2 nights for our anniversay in November 2005. We chose it after realising it is impossible to stay in Bath just for a Saturday night, and had to change our budget accordingly. However, we were not disappointed. It has a good location with a level walk to the town centre. We stayed in a room at the top of the house which was quiet and cosy. The room was clean and warm - granted the decor is not faultless - but it is a beautiful old Victorian house with a wealth of character - if you want absolutetly pristine paintwork and carpets go to a modern hotel. The owners were very welcoming, we had port and cookies on arrival and the veggie breakfasts were huge, and can be delivered to your door if you can't face your fellow guests first thing!! A nice place for a romatic weekend - we had a lovely time in Bath despite the typical November weather.

Very nice B&B and very nice location

from Rooindie

We could not have received a warmer welcome than we received from the person working when we arrived (not the owner). She asked our interests and then used a highlighter on a map she gave us to find our way around (and that map was very helpful). Our room was lovely and very spacious; it faced a main road and we feared that it would be noisy, but either it wasn't too bad or we were really exhausted (either is possible). We were able to walk to everything we wanted to see from this location, and after seeing Bath, I was very glad I didn't choose one of the B&B's that are "just a 15 minute walk to town" because those walks are all downhill to town, and after a full day of walking, that return trip could do you in! Breakfasts were wonderful, and the only time during our 9 days in England where we had the option of something other than "full English". We had pancakes one day and french toast the other (that's just the main offering), and we both agreed after the fact that this was some of the best food we had all trip, and certainly the best breakfasts. My only complaint is that the website says they have internet access, and that is one of the reaons we picked it. When I asked about it, I was told that the owner had given the computer to her daughter, so no internet access after all.

Mini-break in Bath

from mcgi7tp2

Excellent place to visit and a really nice hotel close to the city centre but quiet at night.

Room was lovely and clean and we loved the large ensuite bathroom. (Room 4). Breakfast was yummy and the staff friendly, helpful and chatty.

Thanks for a lovely stay.

(When in Bath we recommend doing the walking tour that leaves outside the Pump Room twice a day. Informative guide and a lovely way to see all the known and not so well known bits of Bath).

A shiny gemstone

I came to stay at Bath and Marlborough House for 2 days, I had done research before leaving on my trip, specifically wanting a vegetarian B&B, which after communication with Laura the proprietor of Marlborough House, I absolutely couldn't wait to get there. Our host Laura was there to greet me upon my arrival and gave me some wonderful advice on places to eat, happenings around town, and side trips and tours I might be interested in. ... My room was the penthouse at the very top which I found very cozy and delightful, the extra touches to the room, homemade vegan cookies each day, the lovely antique furniture, and wrought iron bed. The only comment I have would be the (shower's) hot water was not quite as hot as I would prefer. The dining room was light-filled and charming filled with flowers and lovely decoration. The breakfasts were very yummy and plentiful. I want to thank Laura Dunlap and her staff for the very friendly and gracious service they provided while I stayed at their beautiful mansion. I would highly recommend this gem to anyone, vegetarian or not. I loved Bath and its surroundings, and Marlborough House helped to make my trip more than memorable.

Marlborough House Hotel - a delightful place to stay in Bath

from anonymous

We spent 2 nights at Laura and Charley Dunlap's Marlborough House Hotel. It was a delightful place to stay. Laura and Charley are welcoming and extremely helpful, as well as being fun to talk to and full of information and anecdotes about Bath. We stayed in the Bamboo Room which was comfortable and pleasing. The attention to detail in the provisions in the room made us feel quite pampered and Laura's breakfasts are really something to write home about. Before we left, we had a look at some of the other rooms in the expectation of trying them out in the future.

We will definitely stay at Marlborough House again and would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone wanting to visit Bath.

I was quite staggered to see the complaint on this website and, as a result of my own experience and observations, find it hard to believe.

Would never stay here again!!

from anonymous

Marlborough house was our very first night in Europe. We stayed here in August 2004. After looking at there website we were very excited to stay. We arrived in Bath around 11:00 a.m. and tried to check in but they were not yet ready for us, so we left our bags and toured around Bath for awhile. Due to this we didn't check in until the evening. Unfortunately, this was a big mistake. If we had seen the room earlier we would never have even stayed one night. We stayed in the floral room which is a king size bed and a twin.

This room was absolutely disgusting. The wallpaper was all torn, there is water damage on the walls and ceiling and the ceiling was all cracked. The bathroom was shocking. The shower doors would not open all the way so you had to squeeze your body through the opening. Once you got in they did not close all the way so as you showered you got water all over the floor. The shower did not drain properly so you ended up showering in over a foot of dirty water. My husband could not shower after me because he would have overflowed all the standing water onto the floor. The inside of the shower was completely covered with black mold. It was disgusting and there was no excuse for such dirtiness. The once white ceiling in the bathroom was also covered with mold taking on a nice hue of gray.

The B&B is also on a main street so there is constant noise. The walls are thin and you would never walk bare foot on the carpet. I do not understand how they could have gotten such a good star rating. When we got there the doors were open to some of their other rooms so we looked in them and they were not any better. But they did have a lot of vacancies so maybe word it getting out to not stay there. Because I would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

But if you need a place in Bath look at Oldfields Hotel (which is where we stayed after our 1 disasterous night at Marlborough House) and The Paradise House Hotel.

Marlborough House is excellent

from Shoreview

My husband and I stayed at the Marlborough House in Oct. of 2001. It was lovely! We arrived in Bath a day early and went directly to the inn to see if there was a room available. Laura didn't have any vacancies but she made calls to several other B&B's in the neighborhood to inquire on our behalf. She found us a nice clean room on the same block. She wouldn't let us leave to go check in until she'd given us a map of the city and suggestions for lunch and dinner. When we returned the next day to check in they knew us by name and made us feel most welcome. Our room was on the second floor. It had a king sized bed and a twin bed as well. A small clean en suite bath too. The Marlborough House is a vegetarian establishment and while my husband and I aren't vegetarians we were pleased with breakfast each morning. The staff was friendly and tons of fun to visit with. I'll be back in June for my second visit and can't wait!
