Tourist bus to Cusco

Up early to get the tourist bus to Cusco. Was a nice posh bus (not like you find in Bolivia) and stopped at 5 or 6 sites on the way. Was good to have a guide point out all the interesting bits and as we came in to the Cusco valley it was lovely to see such a change in landscape with loads of farms and trees and rivers and stuff. Much more interesting to look at compared to the altiplano. Nice buffet lunch too which made a welcome change from the usual blandness of bolivian and peruvian grub. ...

Puno, Lake Titicaca, Cusco

Wow, so much has happened in the last week it is hard to remember it all. We left Arequipa via bus last Sunday, spent a couple of days in Puno, went to a couple of islands in Lake Titicaca spending a night on one of those islands, spent a couple more days in Puno, and yesterday (Friday) we took the bus from Puno to Cusco, where we are now. We loved Puno. It is in a beautiful setting covering the hillsides above a wide bay on Lake Titicaca but the town is a backwater, gritty place. It is a com...

Cusco

We are leaving Cusco early tomorrow morning on the train to Aguas Caliente at the base of the road to Machu Pichu. We will be in Aguas Caliente for two nights and will take the short bus ride up to Machu Pichu on Friday morning. After that we plan to stay at a couple of small villages in the Sacred Valley for several nights. We are not sure if we will have internet access for the next week, so we wanted to send an entry to our travel blog now. Food is something that is an important cultural i...

Ollantaytambo and Halloween in Cusco

... a bus from Calle Grau for 3 soles each and after 2 hours, got off at Urubama. Here, we took a colectivo (30 min) to Ollantaytambo for 1.2 soles and arrived before the tour groups. There were plenty of festivities. Singing, dancing and music to start the holidays. Had lunch at a nice restaurant on the plaza although the wind picked up and the blowing dust was unvbearable. The ruins are lovely and interesting and I spent the next hour touring ...

Worse for wear in Cusco

... use of the pool but it was a bit chilly for me. We were shown our accommodation, which was basically a cane hut with a mud floor and 4 beds in it - when we had booked the tour we were shown pictures of a private room with its own bathroom but apparently there had been 'some confusion'. We had to share with the other couple on the trip, which was kind of weird. Not as weird as for her I suppose, since it was her birthday. Lucky her getting to share with us.... After a ...

Sexy Women and eating Guinea Pig

... Sexy women. The latter was not completed as the Spanish called a halt to all future building works upon their arrival.

We then ventured into the city which although once was the Inca capital is now predominately Hispanic in religion and architecture. We visited the main square, cathedral and various other churches some of which had used the original Inca buildings as their foundations. You ...

In the Footsteps of the Incas

... an idiotic guide for Chachani, we spent quite a bit of time going around tour companies to make sure we didn't get landed with another idiot. Thankfully, this time our endeavours paid off and we found a fantastic company owned by a top bloke called Arturo who took a bit of a shine to Louise! We were to get Arturo's top guide, called Herber, who over the trip proved to be superb.

With the trip booked ...

Maras, Moray and the Salt Mines -Sacred Valley

David Ramos, our guide, brought along his Peruvian flute today and played for us at the bottom of the main circular terrace. We sat on the ground, I closed my eyes and listened to each note as it slowly joined the still wind. I was hoping that I would feel some of the earth energy this area is known for. I was focused and relaxed. At one point Harvey moved from the side where he ...

First-Class Train back to Cusco

... by three young Peru Rail employees who served us our meals and as well, paraded down the aisle wearing very nice hand knitted alpaca wool sweaters plus other Peruvian clothes, all for sale. At one point, one of them came down the aisle wearing a mask and a costume and going about at the sound of the music. I don't know what it represented but it was fun watching them.

It was 8:30PM ...

Long live Cusco!

... will I feel the acclimatization effect or will I simply be fine? Having read so many horror stories about it, I can tell you that some of them really scares the hell out of you. I tried not to show Mi my anxiousness because he himself was quite confident that everything would be fine. But that's not the way I felt. Would I simply drop dead once the doors are opened?

As the pilot started making ...
