... and our guide took us to the roadside see a (quite possibly live, and quite possibly full of chemicals!) shell. The farmers in the area still to this day find shells in their fields on a daily basis when ploughing. Once again, mind blowing! That shells, and possibly bodies, are still being found almost a 100 years on. Testament to the fact that this area really was literally decimated. Crazier still is the army now has the job ...

We set off on a walking tour described in our guidebook and enjoyed wandering past cute buildings and along the scenic canal. We really enjoy doing the walking tours in our book and they usually last between 1-2 hours depending on how often we stop for pictures. They give you just enough information about the buildings to be interesting, but not so much as to be overwhelming. ... fairly early. After standing in the wrong line for 20 minutes, we were directed to the correct line, which had a 1 hour wait. When we got to the counter, we were told our railpasses did not cover the train to Brussels. We would have to pay full price for the high speed train leaving in 15 minutes, or wait and get on local trains with a several convoluted transfers.
