... sadly very disappointing. It has abundance of history here but they seem to struggle to know quite what to do with it unfortunately. We did find the paddle steamer (pic) we had originally hoped we could take a trip on, but found out there is only one a day & this was too early for us. So that kind of completed the sights in Wanganui and it being a lovely day and having had the road between Wanganui and Raetihi flagged up as a good road to drive we decided to take firstly the minor road running along the river up to Raetihi and then back down. ... was formed in 1989 when the township objected to becoming part of the Manawatu/Wanganui District, wanting to stay as part of the Taranaki District. You can buy passports and have them stamped at the local hostelry and join in the celebrations every couple of years at their Republic Day. We have our passports but unfortunately will miss the festivities as we shall be in the South Island during January.

... harbour. We stayed and chatted, drank coffee and tea and ate homemade scones and biscuits. It seems a long time since we sat in a lounge and relaxed in a home. We then made our way north on Highway 1 on the way to Wanganui. The scenery was very different from South Island. ... crossed it and home. It was sunny and hot! Kayaks were out training and all was beautiful and peaceful! Not for long though...by the time we had breakfast, Fred and I went for a stroll and we got on our way, cyclone Lusi decided it was time to show up.
