... between Dutch and French. In practicality though, Brussels is really a French speaking city. Bruges is known as the “jewel of flanders” and is officially Dutch speaking. The south of Belgium is French speaking and is known as Wallonia. There is also a German speaking part in the east. I think the language gives you a good idea of how much Belgium is a country of states rather than a single country with a single history.

... but how could I resist?) the beer was smooth and at when you got to the bottom, there was a sweetness that was reminiscent of a rich maple syrup. The mussels must be a regional specialty - every single bistro we walked by advertised mussels. We ordered our mussels in the house sauce - a creamy, oniony sauce. We sat at the patio, admiring the beauty the square had to offer as we savored our beer and mussels.

A great way to start the trip.
