    ... rice with a pancake inside, sticky rice and pork, banana and coconut milk pudding. And, finally, bun cha -- another noodle and pork dish in broth, this one a lunch dish -- that was, again, spectacular. Ahn explained that every Vietnamese meal has yin and yang -- crunchy and soft, sweet and sour, spicy and mild, hot and cold.

    We also had a short tour around the old quarter via bicycle cabs.

    ... We knew our hotel was situated in the "Old City" and gradually we began to leave the industrial districts and see some rather tiny lanes and eerie back alleys. In the mist shrouded light Fu Manchu himself could easily have appeared at any moment.

    However, we eventually arrived in a tiny back alley whereupon we were greeted, not by Fu, but by Martin, the manager of the spectacularly named Splendid Star Grand Hotel.

    ... from Texas was with us still as we had said we would all share a taxi. He offered to lend us the dollars and we paid him on the other side. I really dont no what we would have done if he wasnt there! Finally on the other side, we all started looking for a taxi to the city center. They were all really expensive, but then we stumbled across a airport bus that was going to take us to the city for just 40,000 dong each (£1.20). Great we though and all jumped ...
