Hanoi, Dac Lac, Vietnam travel-vietnam... started saying $11 we suddenly got very interested! Room was actually one of the best we've had, hot water, bath, flatscreen cable TV, minibar. Suddenly this didn't feel much like roughing it / backpacking at all!

Now Hanoi itself is a weird little city. Normally the locals are quite switched on as to the best ways to separate a westerner from their money. This is done by bunching up a whole lot of hotels ...
Hanoi, Vietnam flash101... evening - but we did get an extra stamp in the passport!
The next day we flew to Hanoi. We had a little issue at the airport after the airline said that we had to sign a waiver that they were not liable for us not being accepted by Vietnamese immigration due to us only having a single ticket into Vietnam and not a return.
We explained why but they still made us sign it. It didn't matter anyway as we had no issues at immigration and arrived ...
Hanoi, Vietnam poonamandadil... we realized we were starving, so with a better sense of direction we decided to head back out toward the west end of the lake and what is known as the Cathedral District, for something to eat and some further sightseeing. Despite the fact that Bill was clamoring for more spring rolls, and we circled a couple really long blocks searching for the perfect authentic Vietnamese restaurant, we ended up eating Italian at Mediterraneo, which is located kitty corner from beautiful St. Joseph's ...

We pushed the boat out abit with a bill of $ 100 but the meal was yummy, the setting in old French Villa beautiful and the service great. Afterwards we walked across the road to french style bakery for gateaux’s at $ 1 each!! A fantastic note to finish our time in Vietnam on!!

Hanoi, Vietnam michaeltonny... 3. Soda In A Bag Soda in a bag has mainly been spotted in Thailand and Laos. Not so much in Vietnam. It's as simple as it sounds -- just a small plastic shopping bag, about the size of a 1-quart ziploc, filled with ice and soda. Thai and Lao folks do this because the vendors need to keep the glass bottles that the soda comes in so they can get reimbursed for the container. You can buy the whole soda with a glass bottle, but it costs more. The cheapest way to get a ...
Hanoi, Vietnam sarahandhanan... Our first shop was a commercial chain, a bit like Top Shop, and we discovered how small asian clothes really are. Emma was a little upset when the only size that would fit was XL. It definitely kept the shop clerk busy trying to find items in that size. Next of all we found a local silk dress shop. This time no prices where on the items, which meant a chance to barter. Something neither of us have ever done before. In the ...
Hanoi, Vietnam emmaandpaul... would start with an exorbitant amount at least 200-500% higher than they started in the south. Unless you really like the bargaining process (which I do not), this does not make for a pleasurable shopping experience and I was glad that we bought lots of souvenirs already. I would say the best souvenir shopping in Vietnam was in Saigon and Hoi An, but Hanoi was definitely the worst. One exception to this was the Saturday night walking street shopping on P ...
