I am in the last city of the world, it is a strange feeling. The scenery is the best i have ever seen, all around are mountains, and the beagle channel lying in front of us. Today I am going up theMartial Glacier, it has amazing views. I met a very nice hongarian girl in he last hostel, and we happened to be on the same bus coming here, so we travelled together all day, and we will stray together during our time in Ushuaia. The bus trip took ages, i was so fed up, but at last we arrived aroun...
Ushuaia, Argentina luciecoxThe flight to Ushuaia was relatively uneventful. We sat beside a guy who turned out to be a captain of Antarctica cruises, but we were so tired we did not actually speak to him until we were getting off the plane which is when we found out he probably could have had a story or two to tell. The final decent and circle above Ushuaia was maginificent. The mountains and glaciers at the end of the world look great from a plane, scattered among the islands that make up Tierra Del Fuego. We landed a...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina mrewkowskiMonday was spent trying to get organized. We went to the bank, exchanged some travelers checks at a reasonable rate to have some cash kicking around. We also found out that it is not uncommon for ATMs in southern Argentina to run out of cash on weekends. Monday they get restocked but there is a limit how much you can withdraw (only $100). Then we checked what there is to do here, and got a ticket out of town on the first available bus (on Friday morning, nothing sooner). Having gotten all tha...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina mrewkowskiTuesday was time to hit the road. Our first trek of the trip was a one day up to see Glacier Martial. The trip included a 2 hour slow walk up city streets and pathways to get to the base of the mountain. Then a 1.5 hour ascent up pathways and then a sandy hillside. Not very challenging but some parts were a bit steep and slippery. Weather co-operated. It was mostly in the teens, and when the sun came out was quite warm. When the sun went down and the wind started, it got quite chilly. We go t...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina mrewkowskiAfter a day of bumming around, Thursday was another trek day. This time we were off to Park nationale Tierra Del Fuego , to do one of the day long treks there, to the a lookout summit. The day did not start particularly well, as it was quite cold and rainy. When we got to the park, the first leg of the trip was along the shores of the beautiful lake with a wonderful mountain back drop, but this meant that it would continue to be windy as all heck. After less than hour, the trail turned more i...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina mrewkowski(written in El Calafate, under slight influence of some fantastic Callia Alta - 2007 Shiraz-Malbec) Before we leave for the last time from Ushuaia some last thoughts: It really is the end of the world. Most stores and many other signs mention it. They are quite proud of the fact that they are the southernmost city in the world. Having said that it is only as far south as Edmonton is north. Meaning that they never have 24 hour days as we suspected. Sun sets around 10:30 with a light dusk for a...

Hola All, So day three in Ushuaia, well I was not sure what would be in store when I was in town for a couple of days so you sort of play by ea r when you get here well today I went out to the lakes districts its around 65km from town on the only road so it's easy to follow even if you are hiring a car. The lakes here are quite beautiful as they are backed by the Andes ...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina blairn99... anyways, to keep warm, these natives had fires burning constantly. this is the sight the white man saw when they first arrived, calling this area the land of fires or Tierra del Fuego. now there´s the history lesson for the day. one other cool thing about ushuaia is that its an interesting mix of old, young, wealthy and budget... people of all sorts arrive to see what the end of the world is like and to experience the land of fires...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina euniceandbyoung... any of you with romantic visions of driving through the Pampas one day - it's just Lincolnshire with a different accent. "When you think of The Pampas, think of the nappies" - the contents are very similar. Perhaps we are just bitter at being mocked by a road sign this morning. Ushuaia - 2900 km it read. Are we really that far away?! Aside from the occasional relief brought about by fields of sunflowers, giant yellow orbs in a sea of green monotony, we are in no delusion that ...
