Arequipa & Colca Canyon

Another nightbus brought me from Cuzco to Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru. A nice city-centre and excellent excursion opportunities speak for Arequipa. The pics include a two day trekking to the Colca Canyon, home of the impressive condors.

Volcano El Misti close to Arequipa

Climbing the 5825m volcano "el misti" was definitely a unique experience and a very demanding one! Climing 1200m of altitude the first day to spend the night at the height of 4600m before ascending another 1200m at 1am, not to mention the decline of 2400m the same day...lots of excitement!

Trekking...for Dummies

We survived the 5-day jungle trek to "Ciudad Perdida" (Lost City) and confirmed all suspicions that Lucy loves uniforms. There were "Contraguerrilla" military posted everywhere, and we quickly discovered that they have no qualms whatsoever handing over equipment for photos! Thankfully they did show some discomfort when one of the girls pointed an assault rifle at someone else, but apart from that it seemed business as usual and ...

Dia 3 en Arequipa

... Classes last 4 hours with a 20 minute tea and snack break. Classes are held in a small courtyard where we enjoy plenty of sunshine and small breezes.

My host family makes the largest meal of the day for lunch. Everyone meets about 1:30pm and so far I have enjoyed salad, soup, fruit, rice and fideo dishes that are quite delicious. Served with lunch is the Peruvian drink chicha morado (made of purple maiz) which is very good.
<br ...

Don't be Cuy with me

... Cracking open the skull plates revealed a guinea pig brain. It was so cool. The problem, of course, was than I now wanted to remove and dissect the brain but this particular one didn't really have the same structural integrity as a normal brain because it had been cooked. For those of you who might be curious, brains when cooked take on a rather mousse-like quality... I cut into it and it just sort of fell apart.

I can appreciate why Cuy is a national ...

A volcano, a mummy...and many yellow taxis

... the same thing over again – smiling back and shaking my head – “No, I don’t want a ride. I actually just want to walk around." Eventually it got to the point that it happened so many times that I learnt to just ignore them and to keep on walking. I could swear that there were more yellow taxis on the streets of Arequipa than locals and visitors combined! Then there were also the ID photo “salespeople” – you would find ...
