Pouilly-les-Nonains, Rhône-Alpes, France pascale.machWe arrived at our next campsite, in the heart of the Chaine des Puys, an extraordinary area which consists of 80 extinct volcanoes which were active from 60,000 to 6,000 years ago. There are numerous hot and cold springs, the most famous of which is Volvic. In the evening we decided to drive to the top of the nearby Puy de Dome, at 4806 feet the ...
Royat, Auvergne, France oldagetraveller... opportunity to make our lunch which usually consisted of a baguette filled with pate, cheese and or meat. We would stop along the way some where for lunch in a park or a Chateau. The cruising along the canals was incredible especially going through the locks. One part took us over one of the longest viaduct in Europe at a place called Briare where we stayed for the night. The first couple of days was heavy going but my knees and legs settled down that ...
Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, France caroladele... saw at least one English yacht cruising peacefully down the canal. Someone once told me it is possible to travel from the UK to the Mediterranean through the canals of France, even in a yacht. An excellent way to see France - but don't do it in a Bongo sized boat. We first stopped in Charite-sur-Loire, for some bread, but all the other shops were shut. This seemed to be the pattern in every town we passed. At first we ...
Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, France born2bongo... felt he saw in his country, he agreed to head a government in "Free France" (now usually called "Vichy France") after agreeing to allow the Germans to occupy 3/5 of the nation. After the war he was sentenced to death for treason but had the punishment commuted to life in prison by Charles de Gaulle, on account of his service in WWI. I can't help but think about that history as I drive through Vichy. A great man, a talented, and courageous and ...
Vichy, Auvergne, France joelmeekerOn Le Weekend we met a group of the French kids and clearly they fell in love with us. So shortly after that weekend they wanted to party with us again as soon as they could. And did we ever. Quentin had a number of us over to get to know us a little better. A couple 40s later we were much better acquainted. It was the start of a beautiful friendship.
Vichy, France beccx... like it. So we met up with some friends at the club that we had met in Vichy, and been hanging out with since we got here. Kate, Chelsea and I decided to go back to their house to drink some more around 4 am. We just sat there chilled, and drank some more. Its funny to have conversations with them since they know little English and we know little French. We finally passed out around 8am. By noon everyone was up and ready to go. We headed back to Mac Do's for some lunch...I ...
Clermont Ferrand, France beccxSo, on September 1 we headed to the Gare de Lyon and made our way down to Vichy. Its about 3 hours by regular train south to Vichy. When I got the station a girl from my school met me and took me right to my dorm. I was super nervous about this. I really wanted something nice to live in, and thankfully my dorm is perfect for me. It was super clean, had a shower, with pressure, toilet, and kitchenette ...
Vichy, France beccxI finally have a television in my hotel room. I know, I'm in France and I should be exploring the world around me, blah, blah, blah...but I have a tv!! I'm not just psyched that I can sit and be a couch potato, I'm psyched for the French programs that are on. Let me give you a preview: 1. Secret Story: It's really pronounced like that. Say those words in your head with a French accent (See-chret Stow-ree). There 10 people who live in a ...
