... heaven. The frescos are original but look fresh and new. I’ve never seen anything so ornate that doesn’t rely on gold leaf. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and really very unique. The altar is at the west end – unheard of in a catholic church but done to save the stone screen. It certainly reinforces the power of the church so I suppose it succeeded in its purpose. ...

... to tell us it’s time to get gas. The next gas station along the freeway is 60km away. We set the Garmin for the nearest gas station and get off the freeway. The first place is out of business and we end up on a dirt road that goes in circles. Finally we find a station. I swear it was less than a mile as the crow flies from where we started. ... to Ambialet, a lovely village in a bend in the River Tarn. The bend is so sharp it nearly forms an ox bow lake! If not for a 35 meter strip of rock the village would be on an island. Lovely coffee stop in Lescure, sitting by one of the 11th Century town gates with its 19th Century clock. On to Franciscan priory and 12th Century shrine, Notre-Dame de la Dreche. I head off alone to this lovely museum. Toulouse-Lautrec was born in Albi and his parents donated his works to the city after his death so this is a very extensive collection displayed chronologically from his earliest teenage works. His paintings were offered to the Paris galleries but they all turned their noses up, much to Albi's benefit! After noon walk ...
