Today we drove up the coast to catch the TranzAlpine train to Christchurch. We stopped at the Franz Josef Glacier and hiked up to the viewpoint. The glacier is over 11 kilometers long and it moves very fast, though it used to be much bigger. When I get older I may come back and try to climb up it. New Zealand has lots of glaciers. The train went through the Southern Alps and crossed them at Arthurs Pass. We went past lots of mountain sheep stations, waterfalls, rivers, and mountains. It was a...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand zolabHow about a Haka!!! The Maori people do hakas to warm up their bodies for battle, and now they do it for celebrations, for fun, and at the start of every NZ rugby match. Tonight I saw my first-ever live haka and it was awesome! In Maori, haka means "breath burn" (Ha is breath and ka is burn) and it is so fun to watch and to do. More about that in a minute. It was quite rainy this morning, but we drove to Akaroa to swim with dolphins. Because of all the rain, the sea was too rough (and cold - ...

We stopped by at hokitika gorge which had a cool swing bridge and nice turqouise waters, and then headed all the way back, and went to the pub for some final food and a goodbye, before my early 4am start this morning to ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand nikkiyates... I didn't like" I added, as the smoke stung my eyes. We waited for the fire to slowly rise, as the fat from the snags would burst forth. Nope. The snags just sat there and sooted over with kero smoke, so we put on the couple of steaks as well and poured cooking oil over the lot for a fiery baste. Flames shot up about half a metre and things were cookin' a fair bit faster than anticipated. Actully, it was a bit hard to differenitate between food & fuel... The womenfolk engaged in a ...
Highways of New Zealand's South Island, South Island, New Zealand harleynut... have fun, the first part of the cave required chest deep wading through the stream which then went to calf deep for the most of it. The cave had high ceilings from centuries of the stream carving its way through the limestone. The cave was only 580 meters long and took us 45 minutes. The last part of the cave required a climb over several waterfalls past a swimming pool, then up a steep ladder, and one good belly crawl for 2 meters to get out. Yesterday we went to Christchurch with ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand sarahandaaron... other than cutting trees and wiping bottoms (that’s Bex’s job!).

In short, we’re having a blast, good to earn cash again, but equally we have itchy feet to see some of what we are here for! New Zealand is an incredible country, beautiful, relaxed, fairly cheap, but ultimately we believe too far away from anywhere to live forever!

Love, hugs, kisses and misses from the happy couple, and we will touch base soon(ish) with another blog we promise!

xxx

Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand barkmecca... that night and couldn't get to sleep until 6:30am, but definetely having a really good night saying goodbye to some good friends. jet boating was an extreme adrenaline rush, and although it was quite a bit of money for such a short activity, i would highly recommend it to everyone. the captains are amazing driver and you you within inches of rock walls at full speed, pull 360 degree turns on a dime, and drive up rivers so ...
Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand tsquared... view. Incredibly I'm in the middle of the city and there is barely traffic noise. Thurs 22 Jan Woke up many times through the night - new bed. Finally got up and went for a walk along the Avon river with little concept of where I was actually going, except downstream. It was nice to get out of the 'city' and into the suburbs - must admit that the city towers disappeared very quickly. I was still rather tired and after a while lay down on the ...
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand plainyApologies for the delays its been hard to keep this updated....since last writing we have been in Rarotonga, spent a month travelling over New Zealand and have spent a week in Melbourne!!! In review.... After 7 weeks in the US and Canada we were defintely ready to move on. The various state taxes, car orientated living and rampant consumer culture had taken its toll on us lowly travellers so we were oth ready for something abit more easy going.....a week in the south ...
