What shouldn't we miss while we are here?
Monterosso, Italian Riviera, Italy frdrick... best friends by the time we left... 7 Euro well spent!!
Fri 13 Nov
Drizzle greeted us this morning so we got on our wet weather gear and headed off for a walk along the coast to Portofino which was 5km away. The wind blew away any cobwebs we may have had but it blew the rain away so we were happy. The walk followed the coast where we looked into the deep blues ...
... town stretching among the hills to frame the see... not too bad to wake up to if you ask me! Before exploring the other cities we walked through the streets of Manarola down to the marina. Boats lined the streets as they are docked for the fall and winter. It made me think of how lively this place must be during the summer.
A little bit of a drizzle in the morning but the rest of the day turned out nice, even a little sunshine. We walked Via dell'Amore from Manarola to ...
... bed every few nights... for your benifit of course!
It took two trains and three hours to arrive in La Spezia and another quickie up the hill to Riomaggiore which is where I am now. The most southern of the 5 lands. I was sitting on the train just enjoying the view, of mountains in the distance and houses speckled throughout farms, until we went through a tunnel, and I saw some flashes of light ahead and ...
Tuscan Riviera Portovenere
Had seen it on Getaway and looked very pretty.. Found a hotel with sea views and have spent 2 nights here resting , climbing around local castles… eating sleeping and watching the boats go in and out… not much English here but we are not hungry or thirsty so all going well….
Tomorrow we are off to the South of France.. 3 nights planned in Nice.. Really looking forward to it but have loved Italy…
... steps leading down, down, down to the sea. Either way you get down, the steps going up are anything but fast. We took a refreshing break and took a quick swim from the rocks at the bottom of the stairs. It was an interesting view of the village to swim out and see the buildings appear far up on the cliffs.
The walk between Corniglia and Manarola was much easier and kept us close to the sea the entire time. This part of the hike was very scenic since we ...
... out to find food. There is a little bar/restaurant on the main street called David that gives free tapas plates when you order a drink and they were inventive and tasty (great local olives and a creamy type of potato salad stood out). We planned to go out to dinner, but waited too long and the good restaurants were full. The beach sun had bleached out any ambition we may have had that day and after wandering among the tiny alleys a bit we ...
Cinque Terre, Monterosso al Mare, Liguria, Italy shawhans... 8217;s say 41 minutes past the hour. You’re at the right platform, and all seems to be well. The train arrives a minute or two early, so you clamber aboard, only to find that this is an altogether different train that’s running twenty minutes late. In any other country said train would be diverted to another platform to avoid confusion, but this is Italy my friends. At the very least you’d think that there would be a ...
Corniglia, Italian Riviera, Italy alexanderdrury... with humanity/tourists. Corniglia has fewer tourists, as there is little here to attract most of them. But there is a wonderful noise of the residents themselves...children playing, running around...people in conversation. Tonight at dinner I could hear conversations across the ravine...about 3-400 yards away. And, the food...did I mention the food_
Venice seemed to me to be more an experiment in avoiding pizza, while eatingon the run...various panini...one ...
