... Armed with brochures, we drive to Alet-les-Bains to see the medieval township and its abbey - it's winter and nothing is open, not even the church (and it's after 2pm). We wander around - lots of empty buildings in varying states of decay. It is a thermal spa and must be busy in Summer, but there's only us and some cats today. I suggest that we travel east to Lagrasse, about an hour away - what was I thinking - the further along the way we travel ...

Day 33 Today we travelled 432kms to see the viaduc de Millau. We travelled out of Carcassonne, with grey skies, not along the autoroute, and by the time we reached Narbonne, about 40mins later, it was brilliant sunshine. The non-autoroute road is like driving through the Hunter Valley, hills and undulations, with grapevines as far as the eye can see, old, young, pruned and left without pruning - soil from rich red through every shade to sand coloured. ...

... of champagne, or at least that's the claim, and I wanted to try it. Another time, perhaps. At the table next to us, the family had their pet poodle under the table, who was really well-behaved - in fact, I don't think that we seen a badly behaved dog in any restaurant, and it's quite the norm to bring your dog with you. Next stop is the church (where else?) - St Nazaire and St Celse. Before we get to the church, in the courtyard before the entrance, ...

Day31 A sleep in - and a late start - for what is shaping up to be a domestic day - washing, shopping and la poste. It is a glorious, sunny day - such a long time since we've seen its smiling face - hope it sticks around. I checked that there was a poste in la cite before we came, and even wrote down the address. It must have been a figment of my imagination because la poste does not exist in la cite. So, into the car and drive to the basse ville to the parking souterraine in ...

... it is the fourth largest city in France, and we get into the wrong lane, which leads us to re-travelling a section of the autoroute - and paying the same toll twice! There are more villages in sight of the autoroute, but our speed inhibits focussed picture taking. We have seen more animals - sheep, cows and chickens - and rows of what we think are espaliered apple, and other fruit trees. More interesting countryside, too, with larger hills, and ...
