Today, we explored a little of the military history of this region - mainly WWII, but also medieval! The Battle of the Bulge, said to be a major turning point of World War II, raged in St Vith and the surrounding areas at Christmas 1944 and the following fortnight. On Christmas Eve, we decided to explore the town of Saint Vith a little. It was bitterly cold (but at 2 degrees, still too warm to snow!). Arriving in Spa a bit later than expected we had a tough time finding a campground that was still open and ended up driving in circles, contemplating another roadside night. We finally found a ground which opened from 7 – 7.30pm for new arrivals, so were able to stop in Spa and walk around the centre for a half hour, before checking in.
