Washed Out

Australia's spell of bad weather caught up with us today. After we picked up our rental car & Richard drove so capably west on the other side of the road it really socked in. The 100% humidity did not stop us from viewing Wentworth Falls and walking down the Giant Stairway (recommended only for strong walkers) to one of the famous Three Sisters Rock formation. We ate both lunch and dinner in Leura - a much more gracious and affluent town than Katoomba - tho we did check out the Lilianfels...

It is becoming a bit of a theme for us but we arrived in torrential rain. Our plan had been to take a bus from the airport into the town and to find our hotel.

When we saw rain bouncing off the pavement it was time for a rethink and a hotel shuttle seemed like a very good idea. The driver looked at us and our luggage with amazement, but we a...

But the scenery, I don't think, was the best thing about the Blue Mountains. No, the best part, in fact, was the smell. Why, you ask? Two things: Wild tea trees and ...

Arrived in Leura at about 11am, for coffee, then headed to Katoomba where we have B & B arranged for two nights. Went to Scenic World and did the cable car, scenic railway and scenic skyway experiences, high above the valley floor. Also walked a bit through the rainforest.

After that we had a wander through Katoomba town centre before booking into the B & B, which came ...

They looked very different in the morning light. We then headed along the rest of the Prince Henry Cliff Path, taking in the changing view on the way, to the Katoomba Cascades. The cascades are at the top section of the Katoomba falls which drop off the cliff a ...

... is the steepest incline railway in the world, the incline is 52° and it went through a tunnel. We were just getting comfortable when it was over! We had no idea that it would only take two minutes and it didn't bring us to the valley floor. So after a disappointing railway ride we set off on a rainforest walking trail. Along the way we passed old coal mines. They have a bench named miner's rest where there is a pipe of ice cold drinkable water. They also have a few ...
