After dinner last night we decided to walk to the other end of town, not too taxing given the main street is only about 1.5 km long, and as we found out today the widest main street on the South Island. We didn't expect to find anything at the other end so we're surprised to come across a beautiful mosaic feature in a park. ... up front. It takes less than 2 mins to start seeing the glacier. It's apparently 300metres deep and where we landed on top there was around 30cms of fresh snow. We got out and were able to take some amazing pictures (on top for about 10mins) before we had to head back to base. I'm so glad we did it. The title pretty much sums up the two days we spent at the glacier. When we woke up Monday morning the prediction of rainy cloudy weather was correct. We quickly learnt that there is really not an awful lot to do around the glacier when it's raining apart from drink tea in coffee shops, eat lunch and then head to the hot water springs which don't open until the afternoon which seemed daft.
