After dinner last night we decided to walk to the other end of town, not too taxing given the main street is only about 1.5 km long, and as we found out today the widest main street on the South Island. We didn't expect to find anything at the other end so we're surprised to come across a beautiful mosaic feature in a park. There was no plaque explaining it but it looked like local children, other community members and travellers ( ...

... up front. It takes less than 2 mins to start seeing the glacier. It's apparently 300metres deep and where we landed on top there was around 30cms of fresh snow. We then headed down to Fox ...

... generally very busy, and then during the night I am woken up easily at the best of times and it's all so much noisier in a camper van. Not to mention the hoards of thieves who are trying to break in specifically to my van in the middle of the night to steal all my worldly goods. And every time I turn over in bed the whole van rocks, not very conducive to a good night's sleep... But I digress. We were at the site bright and early for the first tour of the day and ...

... valley to the sea. We then followed the highway back through the pass to our village – our hearts were still on top of the range and our minds digesting the absolute awe-inspiring majesty of what we had just seen. This was truly a memorable moment in our lives.

The next day, with our eyes still cast to the mountain tops, we headed through the Haast Pass. This now paved roadway was originally forged by the Maori, who had found a way to cross the great ...
