        On the footpaths of Sarajevo, you will see many red patterns dotted around the city in the concrete - this is a Sarajevo Rose. When mortar shells exploded, they left a scar which often left a unique "floral" imprint in the concrete. These are filled with red resin to remind everyone of the people these explosions killed. It is a subtle but effective reminder of the war.

        ... the movies, I was the idiot tourist who didn't pay attention to the traffic splashing all the days rain water across the sidewalks. Of course everyone else knew to walk further away from, or even aside from the streets, but I was awe-struck by the view and stood only a foot or two from disaster. So.... tonight I'm back in my hotel, showered up, and laying out my clothes for them to drive. Ok, ok, enough of that. I'm smarter than that. ...

        ... causes of the Yugoslav wars of the '90s are exceedingly complex and these resulted both from historical tensions between various ethnic groups dating from the Ottoman times and more recently from WW-II, as well as a unique combination of circumstances at the time. Thankfully the area seems to be quite stable and peaceful now, at least in the places I visited.

        ... of Mostar since all the others were turned into cemeteries during and after the war. Bata pointed other things out in this square: a mosque with a retail store on its ground floor, a rebuilt building that houses the only indoor public swimming pool in the whole city (on 12 metres long), and another building with a rebuilt beautiful facade, but with its ruins left inside.
