... about 1 1/2 miles out of town at the end of a long and winding gravel lane (not wide enough to call it a road), but it was very nice, and quiet. There were only us and one other couple there that night.

The next day we were off and running west on our way to Kansas City via Charleston, WV, Lexington, KY, Louisville, and points in between. More about that part of the trip ...

    Last Day of Skiing

Sunday, the weather had gotten a little more pleasant with temperatures in the 30s and sunny skies. And most importantly, the wind had really died down. After breakfast at the hotel, we took the shuttle up the mountain and starting skiing from the Village area. The village is right in the middle of the Snowshoe Basin ski area and the criss-crossing trails make it easy to ski down to different lifts. We decided to start ...

... the next day. I really realized the importance of simplicity for such a camera. Even with big bulky ski gloves on, I had no trouble pressing the buttons on the camera and taking pictures and video. It was so cold, there's no way I would have wanted to take my gloves off to fiddle with a regular camera. At around lunch time, we went to Misty's Sports Bar to get some lunch, probably a mistake. It ...

    Treacherous Drive in the Snow

A travel blog entry by jmpncsu on Jan 25, 2013

This past weekend, Sandy and I headed up to Snowshoe, WV for a ski weekend. Although this winter has been very unpredictable with a roller coaster ride of weather, we lucked out and had good skiing weather. Not so much for the drive up. It started lightly snowing almost immediately after we left the Raleigh area and was getting heavy and sticking by the time we crossed into Virginia, making the drive take a lot longer than normal. Particularly ...

... out I-66 like I knew the way. The engine was 'soft and smooth' -- product of 11,000 miles of Alaska and Back. Doing 70 to 75 on the freeway no longer causes frogs to jump around in my stomach. I stay in the left lane so I have an 'exit' should anything happen (ever been in the right lane on I-66 out of DC ? Its a mess...). I now know enough to take Route 15 around Gainesville. I skip the first ...
