      Exploring Local Art

Today was supposed to be a rain day so we planned things that didn't require good weather. As it turned out it was a beautiful day - probably over 19 degrees!! We started out at the Folk Center - many great pieces from local artisans including quilting, pottery, paintings, woodworking, jewellery no more. Then we drove to the Builtmore Estate - home of the Vanderbuilts. We didn't actually see it ... A very ...

We left this morning around 8:50 - travelling to Ashville today. It was a lovely drive through the mountains. More colour in the trees than what we saw in the park. 15 degrees today!! Arrived at Lake Powhatan State park near Ashville around noon. Found 2 campsites, set up camp, had lunch and headed out for a hike on Mt. Mitchell. We wanted to go to the top of the highest point in the eastern states ( Mt. Mitchell 6647ft high). Upon ...

Asheville - Hip Metropolis of Southern Highlands

Asheville is the main city in fat western North Carolina and the coolest place in South at over 2,000 feet elevation, chilly in winter and not as miserably hot as the rest of the South in summer. It has a reputation for being of best small cities in which to live in America, a kind of relaxed, chilled-out hipster locale far away from bustle of bigger cities. If were to live in the South I would likely choose Asheville if for no ...

      Catawba Falls

A travel blog entry by jmpncsu on Oct 26, 2014

... we then climbed the very steep trail alongside the falls that eventually reaches Upper Catawba Falls. Personally, I think this is the more beautiful of the two, though both are quite impressive. Also, the difficult climb up to reach it reduces the number of other people and we had the falls to ourselves. We played around at the base of the falls, getting pictures and goofing off, then started making our way back to the ...

      Exploring the N Carolina Highlands

... seating arrangements and ceramic toadstools etc. we also spent some time in the rocking chairs on the front porch....got to get one of the hose rockers!! Then we drove towards the Asheville airport to go to a quilt show at the local Agridome, Inez and I explored the show while the guys went to check out the RV show at the same location. There were some exquisite quilts and Inez showed me how some of them were made. The guys were impressed with the $900,000 huge ...
