A sign read that a farmer claimed bridges were covered for the same reasons women wore petticoats, "...to protect their underpinnings." Other theories range from keeping the bridge dry, preventing it from getting ice in the joints and cracking, strengthening the structure, keeping snow out, and giving the bridge a barn-like appearance.
