... the 'Door' part of it stuck. Wisconsin is quite proud of it's tragic maritime heritage. At each state park there is at least one informational display about a shipwreck off the coast, complete with details of the ship, how it met its end and photos of what wreckage still survives (complete with scuba divers).

It's ironic that such a lovely place has such a calamitous lineage. I don't remember where I ran across mention of Door County when I ...

... was always marked by the odd hardwood tree turning a brilliant yellow or orange, usually in isolation among the evergreen trees. What I saw yesterday was an embarrassment of riches, everywhere I turned acres and acres of golds, reds and oranges covered the landscape. I tried a couple of times to get a good photo, but nothing could do it justice. Now when people say 'I miss the fall colors', I will have much more sympathy for them. I would miss them ...

... very relieved after 30 minutes when the storm passed out over Lake Michigan and produced one of the best sunsets of our trip.
The next day we started by taking a 4 mile hike along Lake Michigan. We rewarded ourselves after exercising with miniature golf (which we tied in), cheese and wining tasting, and some afternoon beers at some of the local bars in Fish Creek. Our time in Door County concluded with yet another sunset and drinks and food around our campfire.

... the farmers markets since cherries were still being harvested. This is also one of the biggest cherry-producing areas. We left Door County going down the eastern side through Jacksonport, Algoma, Kewaunee, Two Rivers, and after Manitowoc got on I 43 through Sheboygan and Milwaukee. From there it was all interstate around Chicago and onto I 65 down through Indianapolis. We were again appalled at all of the ...
