Life in Auke Bay

We've been stuck in Auke Bay for a week now. It’s been Ok because we’ve been able to catch up on a lot of things like laundry, changing the engine oil and cleaning the outside of the boat, but now we are so ready to move on. We’ve taken the bus to Juneau so many times we are now advising other cruisers about which bus to catch and where it goes. The bus drivers are all very ...

A whale of a day

Sunday, July 5

It was a beautiful, sunny morning, the winds and seas were calm. We left Auke Bay headed for the small village of Hoonah, about 5 hours away. Our new friends on Moonraker and Windfall were about ½ hour behind us, also heading for Hoonah. A couple of hours into our travels we noticed several whale watching boats and small fishing boats drifting near the shore. The water was really calm and we could see a bunch of whale ...

Auke Bay and Skagway

Tuesday, June 30

We bypassed Juneau and went instead to Auke Bay about 14 miles from Juneau. The harbor here is really nice and busy with fishing boats. They have an interesting procedure to assign spots. It's first come first served. You wander around until you find an open berth and grab it. After we found a spot and checked in with the harbormaster we hopped the city bus to Juneau. Juneau ...

Mushing

Hey there, it's Connor again. Today we went on a helicopter to the Mendalhall Glacier in remote Juneau, Alaska. We flew to the dog camp where the dogs eat, sleep and practice their run for the Yukon Quest racing tournament. The workers live there all summer with their dogs. The workers are the mushers and their helpers and the helicopter guys. The dogs were so cute and fun to play with!!!!!! Mushing was cool, fast, exciting, and radical. I was ...

... their pocket knives. They are busy all day and ready to sleep at night. We use the hides here because it saves us hauling kit half way across the world and gives us more eyes on the boys but it would be perfectly doable on your own. The only downside is the weather whoch isn't warm even in high summer and it can be buggy. The trip up glacier bay on ...

... comfy beds and although the cabin was small once you unpacked the suitcase and stowed it under the bed the cabin was great. Only thing is that having an Inside cabin there was no natural light and it surprised me that there was no clock, so I was glad I packed a travel clock because you could easily sleep away till whatever not knowing the time of day.

... it was a really good day with the exception of the finger, which is going to be getting babied for a while until we are at such a place where it can actually get medical attention for it which will probably be in the lower 48 as this area only has emergency clinics with flights out of the area. Not a good place to get seriously injured or have a finger that is somewhat resembling a "C". Tomorrow should be interesting, especially with my ...

Alaska or not?

... need to be seperated from the rock and be put through that whole process but I guess I won't learn that. Who cares, I found gold!! Another day we went to the Alaskan Brewery. It was great fun. Beer tasting is completely for free and you can try all kind of great beer. Surely felt like heaven for Jason, and me : ) We had wanted to go on the tour around the brewery, but then we got into a great conversation with one of the employees Leo who is ...

Juneau - epitomises conservative USA

Definitely small town USA. Perhaps their remoteness puts the blinkers on ... but they are not too worldly wise. Sarah Palin is their leader. Enough said. The village is picturesque - I was a little alarmed to discover that bears still visit the town - so garbage bins are enclosed in cages to prevent bear looting! Lively pub, many tourist traps - all quite pricy. Same curio shops as every stop in Alaska!
