... bad- meeting a university professor in a bar I found myself shortly giving a very dull lecture on Sparta to his Art History students at the University of Yerevan. Other highlights included a free tour with the university professors around the History Museum and a semi-date with an Armenian interpreter I met at the police station whilst sorting out my camera. This said I was glad to finally be hitching my way back to Tbilisi and leaving Armenia far behind.

The church is made of stone outside the mountain, but then melds into it with several rooms actually carved from the mountain. The old monk's quarters are all built as caves. The six days in and around Yerevan were a quick yet good look into Armenian culture, everything from presidential elections to its artistic, religious, and bloody past.

She turned out to be a wealth of knowledge about the city and we listened as she explained the layout. Finally we piled back in the cars and she showed us to the apartment we would be staying in for the next few nights. A basement flat with hot water, electricity and a wonderful patio where we would gather to discuss plans and options for the coming up week.

A church and a dungeon

... I couldn't imagine having to live in that lonely darkness for so long. After we went out, we climbed further up the mountain where the dungeon was built. It was a beautiful view, despite the cloud cover and threatening rain. We were able to see part of Mt. Ararat from where we stood. Actually the rain was not just threatening, it actually came. Slowly at first, it built up to a steady yet light shower. We didn't really mind the rain, though. We ...
