We departed the Lowell area across Hwy 2 towards Western Massachusetts, entering the Mohawk Trail across the Berkshires. We were welcomed with beautiful color, muted by the rains, yet nothing like we have seen before. I shot some iPhone photos which are below. We looked for possible campsite but everything was shut down for RV's like us.

We continued south along Hwy 7 then crossed over Into eastern upstate New York to catch the Taconic Trail just ...

... placed your order and picked up your food as otherwise it disrupts the delicate balance of ensuring there are enough tables for everyone. The system has been enforced since 1937 and worked a treat. After breakfast we picked up our hire cars headed west. Once out of the suburbs of Boston the big wide open space of the USA was displayed in all its glory. Glorious lakes, rivers and trees all surrounded by beautiful autumnal colours - yes trees. Then back into North Adams before climbing up to the highest point in Massachusets, Mt Greylock (almost 4000 ft up), with views ...

... Now we have a car, we can stop at will (well almost) and can enjoy our own lunch choice. Another dose of retail therapy too - Steph skipped the tablecloths and opted for new jeans, while I thought of next summer and bought a pair of shorts from Sears! Exciting stuff, eh?
Supper at Denny's again, I'm afraid, just next door. We're now beginning the real Fall holiday tour and are looking at our options on a daily basis. ...

Rest day

Had a bit of a sleep in although Wes did not have a good night so he did not really get any more sleep than usual. Wonderful breakfast upstairs where we were treated to china crockery and metal knives and forks. It is amazing how much you appreciate small things like that when you have had paper and plastic for 4 1/2 weeks.

Went for a drive to Albany, the capital of New York state. We are staying about 12 miles from the centre of Albany which would be about Bald Hills ...
