So, to start with just a quick explanation of where I am, and where I have been. From Lake Atitlan I (reluctantly) got in a shuttle, along with Catherine from language school who was heading the same way, to Guatemalaīs second largest city Quetzeltenango, more commonly known as Xela (pronounced Chey-la). Its a popular place for language schools ...
Quetzaltenango, Guatemala hollandoWeīve been at this Spanish thing for a week now and itīs beginning to sink in. From Monday to Friday, we stroll up along the cobblestoned 16 Avenida here in Xela at about 7:20 AM, crossing many other little ones being walked to school by one of their parents or grandparents, and we make our way to Pop Wuj for our daily 5 hour private Spanish les...
Quetzaltenango, Guatemala tipepWe crossed the Mexico- Guatemala border with a minimum of fuss and took care to appreciate every second of our comfortable bus ride considering that in our previous visit to Guatemala in more than three full weeks we failed to see even one bus as decent as this one (and this one had, of course, originated in Mexico). It even had a TV! Which unfo...
San Marcos, Guatemala dinojay2At 6:00 AM on Saturday morning, little did we know, we set off on what would be our most ambitious trek ever, a 3 day 40 km hike from Quetzaltenango ("Xela") to San Pedro la Laguna on Lago Atitlan. We were joined by a 30 year old couple - Matt, an ex-US army intelligence officer and his Belgian wife Venla, a linguist who speaks at least 5 langua...

I was gonna stay in Panajachel for 2-3 nights. I got a bed at a friend of a friendīs house (Cristinaīs house). It was so nice so I stayed and stayed until I werenīt allowed to stay any longer. Days came and days went and I did nothing special. Very relaxed in other words.
Lake atitlan, the lake which Pana lies by, had cyanobacteria blooming ...
Another plagerized blog from Jaime, who somehow stays so much further ahead of me with this stuff!!!
Goodbye Antigua, hello Lake Atitlan! San Pedro looked a
lot different in the daylight, thatīs for sure. We got our bearings
down pretty fast seeing how small the town is, the main touristy part
is closer to the shore of the l...
Its been a while since i wrote anything here, im sure i have done some interesting things but they obviously didnt stir me enough to share them...
However after a painful month of school, which of course came with a rip roaring social life, i "graduated" - for want of a better word - and left the massive valley that is Quetzaltenango (t...
Where is everyone?
After speaking to other students at the school we had requested to stay with the Lopez family. As instructed we turned up at the school on Sunday afternoon with our backpacks to meet our new family and move into our new home. However the school had forgotten to tell the family they had new students coming to stay. Aft...
The past few days have been hard, but great, and we are getting ready
to leave San Pedro on Saturday. Probably our favorite thing while we've
been here has been just sitting around and chatting with Maria. It's
been great practice for us to chat in Spanish, and it's also been great
fun trying to explain various things to her... p...
