      We had a wonderful time in Venice today including Mass in the "catacombs" of St Mark's, a fun, long stroll to the Rialto Bridge, lunch in a charming cubby upstairs in a bakery and a gondola ride. Hoping to add pictures tomorrow and you will see that we are dressed like Eskimos. It was really cold. We just finished a delicious five course dinner and are bundling up again to go into the town square for New Year's Eve fireworks. Out Fitbits tell us that we walked over 4 miles today ... So ...

      ... to Campari but sweeter) & apparently "the" summer drink to have!. I was the odd one out of course & ordered a beer although as we noticed later the orange drink option would have been cheaper. My beer as it turned out was some special local boutique brew at 8 Euro a bottle! Just as well I had drank it before payment & was suitably relaxed! Still worth it for the setting not exactly every day you get to experience that setting.

      Caught bus to town of Marostica - about 45 min trip. Town kniwn for giant chessboard in front of lower castle. Legend has it two suitors wanted to marry lord of castle. He forbade duel but instead fight it out in game of chess. Also famous for cherries. Not in season now so had to make do tasting cherry liquer ( very nice ) and lollies. Very quiet, clean town. Then onto another bus for 15 min ride to Bassano. ...

      I love a good book... especially in Italy.

      Slow day today, just found some nice sunny spots to sit and read. Finished 'Born to Run' which I highly reccomend... even more so than in my last post when I was only partially finished.

      More gelato today... did you know that you can get Nutella flavored gelato??? Why these amazing things exist and we know nothing of them in America I'll never understand.

      I also found a bookshop that had Walden translated into Italian. ...
