Around the island

... was an amazing insight into his working process and it was of course brilliant to see his images.

We also ran through the contemporary photography exhibition where there was a beautiful Adam Fuss image in which he'd exposed a piece of photographic paper under light as a photogram and had snakes moving through sand on top. It was graceful and dynamic - I had only seen reproductions but it was so much more ...

The American Museum of Natural History

We should have known better and brought a stroller, but we didn't. The museum was very interesting but very little of the displays interested the kids. They recognized the animals we saw at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney's Animal Kingdom - basically they liked all the animal displays and the sea life displays. The big attractions, such as the dinosaurs weren ...

The Big Apple

New York wasn't what I expected today. The traffic wasn't as bad, there weren't as many people, and people we actually nice! We actually only had 2ish hours to make a whirl wind tour of New York City. We drove down to Battery Park to glimpse the Statue of Liberty ...

New York -Fall 2008

... have a few favourites by now and I and my girlfriend went to dancing at Pacha, Karaoke at Japas 55 and Korean BBQ at Gyu-Kaku. At Gyu-Kaku I tried colon. Sounds gross but tasted good. It was a rarity that I had to try. The Emery Bar is a stylish place with good drinks and friendly bartenders. Great place for "post-work drinks". Rosie O'Grady's bar was way overpriced. I did not try the dining. Amma ...

It's a Jersey Law

... knew how to abide by the law. How many more laws would we know about if we had stayed for a week? We attempted the pool again when we returned home but the weather didn't cooperate. Aargh! Regrettably, nothing a movie won't handle. We put in Scarface and they all grew silent. Another great dinner from the Smithersteins and we were off to "The Neighbors" for our last night in New York.

Departure

... the airport, workmen squatting on bamboo scaffolding, tearing away panels from the roof. Mosquitoes at baggage claim. I walk face-first into a nest of open wires outside customs. The sandstorm hits the highway just as my taxi pulls out the terminal. The air is like silt and I watch it eddy against the window. My driver speaks no English and doesn't know the address I've given him, so we just drive away from the airport, with him honking blindly into the dust.

Coming to America

... took us into the General Assembly, the Security Council and some less interesting places. We also took in the Rockefeller Centre where the ice skating rink had just reopened for winter. This place was a classic with some unusual characters from wanna-be Michelle Kwan's in skating outfits to a dude in cargo pants and a singlet top singing along with his Ipod as he skated around. Watching the sunset and NY light up from the Rockefeller Centre ...

Food and Broadway

... everything was awesome. I especially liked the giraffes and elephants from the opening scene where all the animals entered the theatre down the aisles. The birds flying around on the poles were very cool too. Catching the subway looked promising, because we were finished at the theatre by 11 pm. However we spent a lot of time waiting for a train that never came. The subway ruins another evening.

New York City 2007
