... turn of the century. The pictures that I had seen of this site were some of the most beautiful that I had ever seen. I have been trying to get here for several years and this was gonna be the year. There was however one catch. Getting there required a tough 10 mile hike or some serious off roading in the jeep. Most tourists to the mill get there by professional jeep guides with specially equipped trail rigs. Who needs ...
... there we drove to the Rocky Mountain National Park. We didn't have any specific plans, and the ranger at the visitor's center suggested we drive all the way through the park rather than around it. She seemed to be happy the road was open the entire way, so we took her advice.
I'm scared to death of heights, and driving through that park was somewhat terrifying. It was worth it, but not an experience I'd like to repeat!
... Falls. We got to the trail, but chose not to do the hike. Again today, the storms were moving in. I didn't want to get caught up on a dirt road that was getting washed out. So we headed back down the mountain and back to Gunnison. The timing was almost perfect. We just got down to the paved road before the heavy rains came.

After walking through the sanctuary, Sheila and I headed back downtown to look at the shops - we didn't buy anything - all the stores were pretty high classed. Before leaving Aspen, we drove to the Ashcroft Ghost Town. In its heyday, this town was bigger than Aspen. Now it is a series of log cabin buildings. You can only imagine what life was in the town.

Drove through Buena Vista then past Mt Princeton, 14,000 feet. Travelled along the Arkansas River then up Independence Pass (named by prospectors who defied the local law) from Twin Lakes to the top at 3703 metres. Thick snow everywhere.
