... There is a helmet there that he purchased cheaply in Rome in an antique market, thinking he had found a valuable ancient Roman helmet. He later found out that it was a secondhand fireman's hat. This is not the Springfield of Simpsons fame, but it is the Springfield of the home of Basketball and there is a museum to prove it. Graeme woke up like a kid heading off to Disneyland. ... not sure why these small towns exist. We are here because they have a motel - admittedly it is not in the town, if you can call it a town centre. However next to the motel there is a Yankee Candle - it is huge - a candle, Christmas, homeware store - they give you a map to find your way around. They even have a restaurant and that is where we had diner - it was great food - they had jazz musicians - and we even received a candle - what more could you want. Mileage: 165 ...

I went west past Mad River Glen over the mountain, down 116 and east on 24 past the Middlebury Ski bowl. Lots of Road work made for a less than perfect ride but I enjoyed it.
