... mode, and it is a good opportunity to mention my 'Travel Tokens'. These items have some kind of significance beyond simple functionality.
1. Belt - This leather belt will be used for holding my trousers (or anything else) in place. I probably could have found lighter weight belts to take but this particular one belonged to my Dad. Since his death in 1993 it has been mine and it just seemed appropriate to keep it close by ...
... Riding down through Cumbria the amount of rivers that had burst their bank & surface water on the roads was staggering and really confirmed that we had made a good decision.
Currently, we are all sitting in the kitchen with Anne, Phillip and their two children Ieuan & Elise having stuffed our faces with home made lasagne & apple crumble claimed to be all of work of Phil our host!.. the look on Anne's face might mean he was exagerating some what!
... this so if you haven’t already downloaded Skype get it done girl!!! :o)
Mum made me a corking tea, Gammon baby!! Cheers for that Mum. I managed to eat it considering I’d lost my appetite, I couldn’t see that go to waste lol. An early evening visit to my Nan to see how she was (she’s smoking again…tut tut!!) but she’s doing good.
I had a few visitors over the course ...
Ingnoring most advice we did head off for our anniversary weekend to the Lake District. Cumbria had just experience record rainfall of 400+ mm of rain in 24 hours and amny parts of the area were severly flooded. We had a great run up on the M6 on Friday afternoon and settled into Elim House. In the moring we went down to see the lake which was now creeping ...
Bowness-on-Windermere, England, United Kingdom geoffrhonda... across a couple of boggy fields and muddy stiles until it started to rise. The last few hundred yards towards the top of Latterbarrow felt like they went straight up. Fortunately, the view wasn't bad.
Due to time constraints, we said our goodbyes at this point and the rest of the party headed off into the distance. We took a different route back down, through some stony sheep ...
The day dawned bright and sunny. Actually, that's a total lie. The storm had settled down into heavy rain and the tops of the surrounding fells were clagged up with cloud. The path outside the hut had a small stream running down it. Even the good, rugged people of the BMC made a slow getaway in serious waterproofs.Eartha and I were the last to leave the hut.
We borrowed a dry bag for the map and planned to stay low. We have waterproof coats and boots ...
... for a gentle weekend's walking. The weather did not seem to be about to comply.
The Climbing Hut was not one I had been to before. It is set about two miles off the main road down a potholed, rocky track. It took us a couple of attempts to find the right potholed, rocky track in the dark, but eventually we did. It is narrow and weaves around, zig-zagging between tight farm buildings, over ...
Tow truck 2, turns up at 15:29 and we are off again for the next leg of the journey, Stirling Services to Lancaster Services. This journey takes around 4 hours and I have a nice chat with the driver, Jim all the way. We phone ahead and arrange the next tow truck to meet us at Lancaster at 19:15, guess what? Yes, it wasn't there and I am told it won't be there until 20:15 and it finally arrives at 20:30
Lancaster, England, United Kingdom peterward... Went out for a lovely dinner with everyone that night. Next day it was time to say goodbye as us kids were heading back to London whilst the others were continuing on to Scotland. Very sad as not sure when we're going to see Oliver's parents or aunt and uncle again. Even though I sometimes felt like I had been hit by a truck after all the walking it was a brilliant week with the people and scenery being amazing.
Ulverston, England, United Kingdom oliveramber... of the lake and I strolled around for 10 minutes or so. I assume that was Windermere, but I am not sure. I upload a few picture from there and if you know where it is, please tell me. Anyway, on our way back, we dropped by Lakeside Motor Museum. I was not interested antique cars exhibited in the museum, but John really was.
