Alarms sounding at an ungodly hour, we sleepily rolled out of bed to begin our journey to Belgium. After our last cheese buffet breakfast, we made our way to Amsterdam Centraal to catch our connecting train to Rotterdam Centraal. Once there, another train was to take us over the border to Antwerp, Belgium. This may sound like an ordeal, but these countries are ridiculously close together so the journey took only 2 hours in total, and through lovely Belgian countryside ...

... my way into the Tourist Info Centre.

What a debacle! 25 tourists crammed into a little room with no maps on the wall and no brochures apart from Events or Ticket sales for shows. No free leaflets or booklets that you find in every tourist office worldwide - two young girls behind the counter trying to answer the same questions whilst pointing to a map that is glued to the desk. You can BUY a map - or you can BUY a ...

Antweppen means hand thrower or so they say. The myth is there was a giant, Antigoon, guarding the river, Schelt, who would charge people a toll for crossing the river and those who refused he would sever a hand and throw it into the river. Brabo came along and slew the giant, cut off his hand and threw it into the river – hand thrower – Antwerppen! Antwerp is ...
