The Menin Gate - is a memorial to all British and commonwealth soldiers (except New Zealand and Newfoundland) that have no known grave - over 55,000!!! The ceremony has taken place every evening at 8pm since 1927 - except during German occupation during WWII. It was standing room only at the ceremony this evening Looong day - looking forward to bed ...

... watch an act “Cie Colbeck” which was 3 characters dressed in fat lady costumes causing havoc wherever they performing.

We then went looking for the piano player ”Piano Paul” who brought his own piano attached to the front of his bike. When he got going he too was great but he kept getting interrupted by big street performances!

... had an excellent ice cream and Isi said “The best she has ever had” which is high praise indeed.

As we walked around we went into a couple of bars (it was rather hot and we needed liquid intake!) and in one they were playing a strange game on a pool table with a fixed mushroom barrier in the middle and the goals at each end. They used 5 yellow and 5 red balls. They used the cue on to the ball they were potting rather than having a cue ...

... A short walk away is the Markt where we would recognize from the film. Unfortunately the Belfry is undergoing renovations until the end of March, so I couldn't go up. The 366 steps would have been a good challenge with a great view on top. The Markt itselt doesn't seem to busy in terms of attractions. It's surrounded by a number of eateries, but as the day was still young, more wandering was in order beyond.

... to an hour or so around Gent, which made a great first impression for Belgium as a whole. It's a handily-sized lovely little city with canals and nice architecture and friendly people and a great feel. It was Sunday and most stuff was closed, but people still wandered the city and sat at cafes and restaurants so it was lively enough.

I want to say more about Gent, but we weren't there long enough to get much fodder. But it's a great place. I hope to go back.
