Got up early and headed east toward Carson City, through the ElDorado Forest reaching 7000ft.The snow was quite deep, such a pretty picture..We stopped at Lake Tahoe and walked along the edge of the lake, very cold but extremely picturesque.
We reached Navada and drove onward and will try and reach Ely by nightfall. Saw some deer crossing the highway, poor things hope they were ok..Arrived in Ely around 8.30 and had dinner at the Hotel Navada.
... at some supplementary cold weather gear. While we were fossicking one of the ladies said: “Where did I put my beverage?”. I mean, who says that? But it didn’t seem out of context here. We also got a bit of a demonstration from the lady at the thrift shop about the silliness of the US coinage. The 5 is bigger than the 10, which is smaller than the 25 but then the 1 fits in-between.
Today was fairly difficult but I have some cool stories. I went about 50 miles and most of it was uphill. I was able to reach Echo Summit today which was nice because because i finally got to go downhill. In the middle of my ride I was stopped by a gentleman who wanted to take a picture with us and make a donation right on the side of the road. We came to find out that he is a retired teacher from Golden Sierra Middle School ...
Early start as we need to check out and drive over to Lake Tahoe, a seven and a half hour, 444 mile trip. Packing up the room was our first priority – a quick shove into our bags and we were done.
The checkout was quick as was getting out of Vegas. We started across the desert on the Veterans Memorial highway. There were a lot of empty shops but it was hard to tell whether they were seasonal or closed for good.
... But we moved well and enjoyed the beauty as we climbed upward and then finally descended into the basin around the splendid Lake Tahoe. I booked 2 nights at this timeshare resort. In hindsight I wish I had added 1 or 2 more. It's a beautiful facility, right on the south shore. There is a major renovation going on so part of the grounds are a designated construction zone.
