Left hotel Mt Vernon Il at 745! Good nitr sleep. Brrr temp 37! Try to get home?? We r 1 hr from st louis (600 mi to home from there). Driving thru IL AND IA! At 315PM turned onto 35 notth! Sign said Mpls 182 miles! Yipee!! Ipod says home appx 700pm! Thatd like 12 hr day ( but we habe ot stopped to eat-just snacks in truck) grrrr! OOPS 11/28/14 got a speed ticket in mail from this day thru Iowa! ...

Along the way we made a detour at Olmsted to see where they are building a new lock which will replace locks 52 (at Paducah) and 53 at Olmsted. It is a massive project which will enable the Ohio to be navigable all year round even in the dry summer.

At Cairo, we crossed the Mississippi into Missouri. A very utilitarian bridge quite narrow with a sharp bend at the end as the road stays on the top of the levee bank. Luckily it is ...

... so I used another bag. The lady at the checkout had no idea of the cost because there was no code. No offer to call staff for assistance, so back to bakery for me where a worker put the rolls in a clear cellophane bag which he sealed with sticky tape but no price tag. Back to checkout where I had to tell the operator how much they were.

There were many workers at Krogers packing shelves, working in the bakery, operating the checkouts and packing ...

Arrived early and got our pick of sites. We got this one right on the lake. At dusk, the family of skunks would come out to enjoy the fallen crab apples on the tree in our site. The sunsets were gorgeous! We met Puff the Purple Dragon on the beach! Loved the water tower.

Day 6 back on the road

Salina to Mount Vernon, Illinois was a particularly un-newsworthy day. I looked like we’ve used a little bit of oil – that’s not very exciting and I’m not sure what to think of it. I could also provide the intimate detail of how we load the car each day, but perhaps I’ll save that bore for another time.
