... Kea Summit to the north of us. The sun set into the clouds with the Helakala summit on the neighboring island of Maui visible to the right. The clouds on the east side and the sky started turning purple. The small volcanic cones on the side of Mauna Kea lit up as well. Anywhere you turned, it was beautiful.

Once the sun set, our tour guide treated us with some hot chocolate and we ate the sandwiches and other goodies Paula had prepared for us. Once ...

... I hoped to spend time exploring the cave, but it was very rough underfoot and we only had one headlamp between us, so we left after about half an hour. The formations and colours we got to see were interesting.

Cheaper to eat out!) and relaxed for the rest of the evening. Weather permitting, we will see more of the volcano park tomorrow. ...

Today we engrossed ourselves with nature. From volcanoes to rain forests to waterfalls.

We started out very early again this morning. Our helicopter flight was at 9:30, check-in at 8:45. We are on the Kona side (west) and the helicopter tour (Paradise tours) left from Hilo (east side). We had a 2+ hour drive. We arrived at the airport, signed the papers, and got weighed – how embarrassing! But they need to balance out the chopper based ...

Day 10 - Mauna Kea

... flowers, to pine trees every so often and just weird. I think the visitor's centre was definitely less than the altitude of Canmore. We listened to a video. I can't do meters and feet. Temp had dropped to 59F there so was welcomed after a week of daily heat stroke. Like so nice! It was quiet on the highway and we passed the U.S. Military base out in the boonies. We continued on to Waimea which is lots of lovely pasture. What a big difference between lava ...
