Moving on again we went first to the town of Trelew, one of the main Welsh towns in the Chabut valley. One of the reasons for coming here was to see if we could get some repairs carried out. We had been sprayed by stones when at the Peninsular and these had caused a chip in the windscreen and broken the glass on one of the headlights. As it turns out we cannot get a new glass for the headlight, but at least we were able to tape and araldite it together. The ...
... where it is warmer. The coast line is just filled with them and several are in the ocean riding the waves into shore. What a fun little penguin life they have. We stopped in a town called Gaiam, which was a Welsh settlement. We had a lovely afternoon tea with cakes and snacks just like if we were in Great Britian. The town is quite proud that Princess Diana visited the town for tea.
Peninsula Valdez, Argentina luvin2travelEspecially for the Welsh Family !! This felt more like a school outing-to find the Welsh community and gather as much info as possible! If one ever wanted a bit of Wales outside of Wales and happens to be in the vicinity of Gaiman, then this is your town. Everywhere has Welsh writing and the streets and tea shops are all very visible for the traveler.Needless to say we stopped by at tourist information to gather ...
Gaiman, Patagonia, Argentina kingsandems... some at full zoom. Though I did see my first ever armadillo which was cool, and also ahortly followed by my second, third, fourth and maybe more. I am currently writing this in a place an hour South from there called Trelew (named after Lewis Jones ...
Trelew, Argentina cezzah... the Patagonia which was mostly uninhabited. This explains the Welsh names around the area (both of towns and people). The Welsh were looking to create a colony to keep their traditions alive, etc. All the towns around here link everything to their Welsh origin, but to be sincere it seems to have filtered into little else than a tourist attraction. There is no Welsh spoken anymore (even though some people claim to have heard it), and the influence is limited to the ...
Trelew, Argentina casenannelieke... but she was weak and wobbly for awhile from the anesthetic. While we waited for Gillie, Eve went in for a wheel alignment, and both girls were set to go by midday. We replenished food supplies and back to the Patagonia campground where we stayed for a few more days to let gillie recover. From there we went back to Gaiman for a couple more days before taking the long trip across country to the mountains. Gillie continues to recover slowly.
Trelew, Argentina ddgfraser... said she was perfectly happy for me to stay with her. Later on I met the lady I'd been looking for, Sybil and she let me wash my clothes in a bowl in the back yard. There was something very calming about doing laundry by hand in the sun and wind of this little town. During the afternoon I visited the 1st house of Gaiman, the 1st chapel and then had one of the famous Welsh teas. Of course, the cake was great but I was very surprised to drink ...
Gaiman, Argentina nerys80... stays with the nest and the winner of this fight gets the female and the nest. I was walking back to the bus when I heard a penguin "singing" and went to have a look. There were two penguins (it is very difficult to tell male from female, so I didn't know at the time) all bloody and both making the crying sound. I thought at first that maybe they had lost a baby or something, but then they started to fight! You wouldn´t think that an animal with seemingly little mobility in their ...
Trelew, Argentina epijuarezGaiman is a small town in the north of Patagonia, with a population of about 6000. This is one of the towns where the Welsh settled in the late 1800´s. The landscape around is very arid, but along the river Chebut, the town looks like an Oasis in the desert. The Welsh traditions remain strong here - The Welsh government send teachers here to help retain the language. They´re probably more proud of their Welsh heritage than us Welsh are back home (South Wales). As it was Sunday ...
