I dont ever want to go on another chinease tour!!
Tody we were off to the dragon backbone rice terraces, after a lovely cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon and bannana slices we boarded our tour at 8:00am, with our new Dutch friend. After one and a half hours on a large coach we arrived at a touristy place selling postcards where we then boarded a small coach to take us to a local village. At this …
The fish are attacking Heidi
As it was our last day in Guilin we decided to go and find the reed and flute caves. To cut a long story short: we couldnt find the bus and spent an hour walking around. We then didnt have enough time to go and find it before having to catch our evening train. We stumbled upon a market on our way back to the hostel, which made our day. We bought …
Guilin & Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces
Day 44 – Thursday 17 June 2010
The morning was fiddled away. Went out for brunch, and ended up breaking one of my biggest rules…no Maccie D's unless drunk. I wasn't drunk, but a sausage and egg mcmuffin just was too enticing. Outside Times Square (the HK version) there was a Buzz Lightyear ( a giant one) and I had to get in …
Li River & Karst Topography
Day 48 – Monday 21 June 2010
A big day, the main reason people come to Guilin. We are doing the Li River tour, from Guilin to Yangshuo. We paid 360 yuan for the tour (£36) which wasn't cheap, and we shopped around. There is nothing cheaper. You can do an alternative tour on bamboo boats, but its much shorter, and not worth it for me …
Culture Shock
Ali and Sarah here...
On our last night in Hong Kong, whilst updating our blog, Ali got talking to a guy from South Africa. When he found out our next stop was mainland China he said "boy are you in for a culture shock" and he wasn't far from the truth!
Our next stop after Hong Kong was supposed to be Guangzhou to stay for one …

TravelPod Member ReviewsGuilin Backstreet International Youth Hostel
The staff were very friendly and helpful, there was a room to keep your luggage and a nice chill out area to read or talk, there are two computers in the reception area, and I found logging on to the WiFi was very easy, it worked every time. There was an ensuite shower and toilet in the seven bed dormitory, which was handy. There was no lift so would not be ideal for a disabled person, very centrally located in Guilin and lots of info about local attractions.

Nice place, really helpful staff all with great English. Nice cosy lounge area downstairs, good wifi internet access. Decent sized rooms, although hot water not very hot if I have to find one negative.
