Vegas, Hoover dam, Route 66 and Grand Canyon

Vegas, Hoover dam, Route 66 and Grand Canyon

Following on from Death Valley, we spent the morning driving down to Vegas. The first thing we did was go and check out Hoover dam which is about 40minutes drive away. It was great. It's in a very beautiful area with deep canyons. The water of the Colorado River looked amazing.

This has to be The Wow of our trip (so far)

Luckily we had collected oiur train tickets yesterday, so it gave us a bit more time before the train left. The wind was really chilly, so like good boy/girl scouts, we thought it best to be prepared for cold in the canyon. Our anoraks or parkas are very lightweight, but excellent for keeping out the wind. So Paul returned to the hotel only 5 mins …

Grand Canyon National Park

After leaving Las Vegas in our rental car (from the very nice and helpful Dollar rental cars - highly recommended) we drove west to the border between Nevada and Arizona and stopped at the Hoover Dam. This massive structure blocks the Colorado river and is used to supply power to keep the lights on in Vegas and also supply power to parts of …

Williams, the apple of my PIE!

A travel blog entry by carlin_e

The reason we came to Williams, AZ was to see the Grand Canyon, as the sleepy town is approximately 40 minutes drive from the South Rim entry. It was not my first visit to Williams, as the first time I came to see the Grand Canyon I stayed in the same little hotel. I know that it is a tourist town, with all the trappings, but there really is …

Get Your Kicks on Route 66

After a leisurely start to the day (well for me at least - Glenn went for a run!) - we started our drive to Williams, Arizona. That's a fair distance - about 600km - but not too long with Glenn at the wheel.

Staying at an historic hotel on the main drag of Williams which is on Route 66. Every room is decorated in a different theme - we're …

This place is old, like seriously old, and it is amazing. The staff are friendly and can tell you the best places to eat in town (Pine Country Cafe has the most amazing list of pies!). The rooms are themed, we stayed in the old bunkhouse. What a little gem!
