Overland Track

Tasmania & the Overland Track

... given the conditions but fortunately there was a dry and usually warm hut to dry out in every night. However it took about three days to dry out our boots afterwards. Now in a sunny Hobart and going to do some day walks and touring for the next week.

Cradle and Dove

Today more people joined the tour including a woman from Hackbridge (!) and another Brit called Mandy. Most of the morning was just spent driving and dozing on the way to Cradle Mountain and we reached our cabins for the night by lunch time. After the now boring salad roll we drove the short distance from our accommodation to Cradle Mountain. It was a pretty impressive sight. The Mountain was named as it looks like a cradle and if you ...

Cradle County

This was a long drive to the middle of Tasmania from the west coast. We didn't have much time the first night we were there, just arriving close to nightfall. This was the night that we had to contort our bodies in the Hyundai Getz to sleep. We couldn't, by principle, stay in a dorm bed with no linens for $35 AUS. Of course, we spent a pretty penny on dinner since most places were closed. Ah well. At least it was good ...

Barrington Tops

After our Christmas adventures in Byron Bay we got back in our trusty car to embark on our longest drive - 8 hours to Barrington Tops. We set out from Byron at about 7:30am and did 2 hour change overs, stopping at the big banana near coffs harbour for lunch. We arrived in Barrington at about 4:30 to be welcomed by.....absolutely no one. The place was miles from anywhere stuck on the top of a mountain as though dropped from the heavens by accident. After waiting around at ...

Night kayaking

Definately one of the most insane activities around. White water rafting, in pitch black. Reminded me a lot of the climb of Kinabulu, lots of rocks and absolutly no idea where I was going. Being at the back of the group by the time I got to any rapids there was a log jam of capsised kayaks so managed to fall in at ever rapid. After all that it was back to the all you can eat pizza (14 slices - the bus record was 21) and relaxing in the hot tub.

Barrington Tops National Park

It was a wonderful day, nicely sunny. As soon as we reached the Tops it started to be quite chilly, but we decided to stay there overnight camping. We were in a really quite campsite, equipped with toiletts, picnic tables and, of course we are in Australia, BBQ stoves. Being in such a quite, lonely and silent place, we hoped we would have the chance to meet with some native animals, but only few shy kangoroos approached.

Cradle Mountain

Boarding Oz Experience Bus to Barrington Hills!

6am start to catch the Oz Experience bus with my new found partners in crime - Dan, Patrick and Matt. 20 of us on the Oz Experience bus - 16 blokes and 4 birds (2 of which were with blokes). What the **** is all that about it being a drinking/shagging bus?! I am not happy! Mad Max was our driver and although he's a top bloke he had 2 strikes from Patrick within the hour - One for talking too much bollocks and the other for ...
