... kitchen elves! In any event there are deliveries already present by 9 and they continue during the course of the morning and sometimes in the afternoon as well. Friday and Saturday, in particular, were huge delivery days since there are no deliveries on Sunday. The pantry and refrigerator were busting at the seams on Sunday morning and by the time I left on Monday, it was nearly empty. Usually, the deliveries consist ...

Today was a long day, 27 km with (of course) a big climb above 2000ft at the start. Both of us struggled to get out of bed, dragging our heels into the breakfast room, really just wanting to go back to bed. Last night I limped to the Indian Restaurant in Kirkby Stephen. I had had a sore heel during Saturday's walk and inspection after dinner showed a tense blister the size of 20 cent piece begging for some attention. I was woken at 3 am by the sound of moderately heavy rain. It continued on and off until breakfast and I thought we were going to need our waterproofs. Today's 25 km leg was fairly straightforward again walking through ...

... dull moorland. The sun was hot and there was no shade. It was a tedious slog. The only highlight being a small detour to look at 6000 year old stone circles in the middle of no where. We pondered what those ancient peoples were up to and whether the RAF entertained them too? Leaving the moor we had a lovely 1.5 km downhill walk into Orton through more picturesque farmland. Another meal at the pub with new friends then to ...

Day 5. We were advised in our guide to expect this to be the toughest day. 25 km including a climb to Kidsty Pike, the highest point along the C2C route. Total ascent of 4400ft! We were up early and after a delicious breakfast donned the boots and at 8.30 headed out into a cool, overcast day. Overnight we had a thunderstorm and the hilltops were still steeped in mist. As we climbed, light rain began to fall so the rain jackets came out. We stole a last glance down to Patterdale ...
