Buenos Aires - Slight Return

... were speaking very fast Portuguese, of which we understood virtually nothing at all!

We found our hotel and were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves next door to 36 Billares, birthplace of the Argentine Billiards Association. So the error had a positive side! We had some time to spare before the gig as it wasn’t scheduled to start until half past midnight so we enjoyed re-aquainting ourselves with BsAs. Returning to a place where ...

Ever heard of the Running of the Bulls, Granada?

... usually a result of the haphazard organization of the event.

For example, after the first couple of bulls had run past us, I, inveterate thrill-seeker that I apparently am, made the somewhat foolhardy decision to wander back to where we had begun. While making my way cautiously back I was passed on the opposite side of the road by another bull who stopped at the next crossing to spin around in circles and consider his options. Meanwhile, at my planned ...

... the time. During the night, I talked a lot with my host mom about
her experiences during both wars. She definitely has some amazing
stories, since this place was the sight of many brutal hand to hand
fighting during the revolution and civil war. National Guard members
didn´t care who they killed, and it´s easy to see why people had such a
hatred for them.

Today I started my first day of work. It´s about a 25 minute walk from ...

Tango, steak and wine in the gorgeous Buenos Aires

... managed to understand some of the funny parts of the show! Another night we went to a drum show called Bomba de Tiempo. This was in a massive courtyard with a huge staircase in the middle where about 15 drummers sat and played, with big screens at either side. The courtyard was packed with people, about 500 people jumping and dancing around, enjoying the show. You could also buy enormous glasses of beer. The atmosphere was so good as everyone was ...

C`était vraiment impressionnant avec la colonne de fumée et tout! Au retour, on est allé au Mercado Viejo pour littéralement dévaliser la place, ca fait tellement du bien! ;p

Welcome to Buenos Aires

... I wouldn't enjoy my time here. Arriving early afternoon, I checked in to my hostel in San Telmo. Unfortunately, this hostel is a bit institutional, and lacks the charm and chill vibe of the last few places I've stayed. But it'll be okay for a couple of days. I booked a couple of activities for the next few days. Unfortunately, my timing is off as far as futbol is concerned: The big Argentina-Venezuela match on Saturday is too ...

... make it to Granada shortly after that, though I almost fell out of my bus seat because heat just knocks me out. Found a cool place to stay, Hostel Oasis, in the heart of the old market and got my first street hot dog, something I´d been craving for awhile, street food and hot dog. We walked around and the city is gorgeous and tired ourselves out trying to tour the joint in a day. Caught a movie in an old-school movie theatre ...

Coming home

... C - right in front of a Starbuck's. Got coffee and bagel for Kyla, then went to our gate. I explained the situation to the gate agent (the flight had already boarded), who said No problem, just show us a photo ID. I did - and the gate agent said, "Are you sure you're on this flight? I don't see you." So I showed her my itinerary - and our boarding cards from EZE to IAD - and she still couldn't find us or any record of us. But she was able to create a totally new itinerary. No upgrades ...

Aber jetzt ist doch das meiste im Rucksack was ich brauche und die Planlosigkeit ist ja doch immer wieder die beste Vorbereitung. Am 30. Jaenner bin ich zu frueher Stunde aufgebrochen. ... we were told were supposed to be there to take care of the bugs. We spent a day on a motorcycle traveling around the island and then hopped a bus with our bags to get to an ecological reserve on the other side. Jeff: We've been staying on a double island/volcano in Nicaragua (Ometepe) and the geology of this place is incredible. The larger of the two volcanoes was active just a few years ago spewing out sulfur gasses and ash. We stayed at a hostel right under ...
