Our last stop has been Gatlinburg, TN. We enjoyed our visit to the Dixie Stampede and Dollywood. Jim looked all over the place, high and low but never saw Dolly! We ran into the Compton's from Lexington who happened to be here too. We enjoyed having dinner together with Ben, Suzanne, Charlie and Nancy. It was nice to have friends to enjoy a meal with again.

It will be wonderful to be back in South Carolina even though there will be lots of changes from ...

... on Brewer Road, just off NC-281. From here, we hiked down the old gated logging road that follows Thompson River downstream. In about a mile, we passed the side trail that leads to High Falls and shortly after that, we had to ford the river. The water level was lower than the last time I was here as there were several exposed rocks sticking out above the surface. Not enough to rock hop though, so we had to wade across. ...

followed the GPS. Technology is great, sometimes it's good to
        override it!

Yogi in the Smokies is ten times better
than the Yogi we stayed at in Sturbridge MA. Friendly, helpful staff,
lots of activities, well stocked shop. The weather wasn't great, it
rained on and off constantly but there were still breaks in the
weather to enjoy the pool. We were parked near the river which was
        very pretty and peaceful.

... trailhead for Chimney Tops, shortly before Newfound Gap. Since it was already a little later in the morning, the parking lot was almost full. Jim got the last open parking spot and we were able to pull in behind another car that was leaving. We seemed to have been very lucky on this trip in getting the last available parking spots everywhere we went. The hike up to the Chimney Tops is a strenuous two miles. The trail initially ...

... paper said that we need to be aware of switch backs and high winds but it truly did not register to the degree of the severity of the switch backs. Why for the first time in my life I brushed it off was beyond me BUT I’m glad I did!!!!! I’m not the biggest fan of switch backs and I get myself worked up even before riding them SO someone from above was looking out for me and protecting my nerves from getting the best of me. Up the mountain we went ...
