I guess you should try the tapado

... I asked for the cuenta after eating at Restaurant Margoth (tapado), I just wanted to be sure I was paying 113 Q for all of that and she didn’t really crack a smile until I actually paid her. "Is this correct? What were the prices?" She just pointed and said yes. Pretty much the only people who will approach you are those who want to sell you something or lead you around the town to places where they will get a commission, and ...

... I took a tour to Lamanai which were yet more Mayan ruins but it was a really cool day. I had my reservartions when the only other people on the tour were a couple of Canadian chumps in their 50's and the wife's parents who must have been getting on for 80. They got pretty excited about the most trivial things but were harmless and even though we didn't have a whole lot to chat about the tour made up for it. We got to the ruins by taking a 33 mile boat ride up the New ...

... and even sky comes alive with luminescent yellow silent explosions - fireflies - armies of them! its incredible and as the night grows darker thewhole place from floor to the skies is glowing dots, the sky here is so dark that you can see the milyway and im sure galaxies further on that this.
Needless to say the evening (or before we went to bed each night at 8:30!!) were spent cooking and then just sitting in the middle of this firework liek display.

River-Living in the Middle of the Jungle

... local drinks - Gifiti, generally rum infused with an assortment of herbs. Some consider it medicine. Unfortunately is wasnīt coconut rum and was very strong and bitter. Not recommended.

My next stop was an eco-lodge on the Tatin River, also only reachable by boat. I caught the owner in Livingston and he shuttled me out there. This place is great. Lots ...

... a town geared to tourism and there are many many shops selling jewellery and turtle shells etc all down the main street. The local speciality drink is called a ‘coco loco’ which is a whole coconut with the top chopped off and some rum fermented with a lot of different herbs and spices is poured in. Anwen the rum fanatic obviously had to try one within an hour of being here (and I wasn’t going to say no!). It was very nice ...

Rio Dulce- The Port of Old Sea Dogs

... s, and it ended up being a perfect place to stop, as it costs US$6 a night to camp, it has nice hot showers, and good internet allowing me to keep up with my work.

With in a couple of days I realized that some of the old sailors that were here had been staying here for a longtime. I met 55+ year old Greg who is an ex- surfer from the San Francisco Bay area, he's been gone from the US for 5 years now. He is hanging out in the area due to being ...

... filled with chickens and ducklings, toward the 'bathroom'. Which was a non-flushing toilet with no seat. Hey, beggars can't be choosers. I entered the little room, closed the door, turned around and noticed a six inch gap between the door and wall. No time for modesty now.

I have no explanation but somehow, once I was in the little bathroom and looked out to see the five year old girl, her little brother, and an assortment of chickens, ducklings and a ...

Hillside day 3

... think that expired medications are good to donate is beyond me… why would you think that although it’s not good enough for you it’s fine for people in Belize? Drugs that arrive in date are kept until 6 months past their expiration date here (if they know they’ve been in the airconditioned pharmacy) I think this is somewhat of a compromise because it’s hard to see all the pills which have to be destroyed knowing people need meds ...

Two days in...and enough bus travel for a lifetime

... I have used this tactic many times before and it seems to have a success rate of about 50%. This was one of those times that would fall in the less than successful category--as I surely fooled no one walking confidently in the wrong direction and then sheepishly back past the station in the right direction, 30 minutes later. Back on the right track, I found my way to a hostel and was able to bargain for a room all to myself. (Actually, there was no one else staying ...

The music didnīt last too long as members of the band kept leaving to go outside and smoke joints. The one annoyed band member who didnīt join them, King, sat at our table and complained that everybody had smoked too much weed and didnīt have rhythm.

The next day I took a tour to a local river with some pretty pools you can swim in and a nice beach (where they filmed scenes from the first Tarzan movie). At the beach we just all hung out ...
