Day 5 - The Forbidden City

A travel blog entry by bakes31 on Sep 12, 2013

Another early start so we can fit in the Forbidden City before heading out of Beijing. It's within walking distance of the hostel so we headed there on foot after checking out. Amazing place. Thousands of Chinese tourists frantically bustle from sight to sight blocking our path but we make our way through the crowds to see everything. You can tell …

Day 4 - The Very Great Wall!

We got up early to catch the 08.30 bus to Mutianyu but missed it. We have soon realised that we need to leave more time to get to places. This might actually be a useful thing for back home as we are often late to things. Managed to get on a different bus but weren't really sure if we were going to the right place. Someone on the bus assured us …

Day 3 - The Summer Palace

Today we decided to go to the summer home of Chinese Emperors since the 12th century. It's a great place, very picturesque. Unfortunately we (Britain) and France destroyed a lot of it during the second opium war and looted most of it; sending expensive items back to Europe. Fortunately, there is still enough left to make it worth exploring. The …

Day 2 - Art Scam - Mugged Off!

We left the hostel late today to catch up on lost sleep and headed for Tiananmen Square (the site of the famous protest and civilian shootings in 1989). There is still a huge police presence around and security checks of all bags. It is an unusual atmosphere and we were stared at a lot! We sat down for a short time before deciding to move on. On …

Day 1 - Beijing via Guangzhou

A travel blog entry by bakes31 on Sep 08, 2013

Our first experience of China was landing in Guangzhou after an 11 hour flight from Heathrow. I didn't believe we had landed as the smog was so thick, I mistook it for cloud! My knowledge of this place extends to a GCSE case study I have taught many times. I won't bore you with the details but... did you know that 8/10 artificial Christmas trees …

    Great Location!

Good location in a hutong, very close to Tiananmen Square... we were able to walk around and use the metro quite efficiently. The staff were very friendly and able to help us book our trains and with any other questions we had. A bit hard to communicate at times, but it was ok! The restaurant they had there was very good and they had lots of groups tours to choose from! I had a twin private room, which was a bit on the small side, but it was manageable. The beds were quite hard and our shower was leaking (and quite cold!) but it was a nice atmosphere nonetheless. I am not sure I would stay here again, but it was a great experience and I really enjoyed my time there!

Sunrise Hostel (in a Hutong world!)

A pretty cool place, good food, the dumplings are 'hen3 hao3 chi1!' (delicious) and the street food areas are nearby.
At the street food stall I got a crab skewer for 10yuan which is 1 pound in British currency , you can't get crab as cheap as that in the UK... As well as this skewer I also got a fruit skewer with toffee on it (like an apple toffee but better!!!) , the fruit on this skewer was: kiwi, pineapple, cherry etc..

Everything was really cool. Only the prices in the bar are a bit too high.
