A week before ... the usual trepidation

... and "consume" in the western world ... but it perhaps more importantly it left me with a sense of hope that humanity can find a way for itself that will work ... the people I met last time seemed so much happier without all the trappings of consumer societies in the West ... but at the same time they deserve better than we give them ... my big fear is we turn them into more of us consumers, parasitic creatures with no respect ...

Ferries and Forts

... the first customers inside.
O’Connor’s is a wonder. It’s full of antiques and what some would call junk. Every available space is taken up with STUFF! Lamps, both electric and oil, hang from the ceilings along with pots, pans, and various and sundry things. There are lit candles on the tables, which are about the only clear surfaces in the place. It’s just fun to be there, and I don’t think anything had changed since our last ...

Finally ~ Some people to talk to !

... with his special tool he bought for just this purpose and found that the new chains he had put on before we left had stretched and were 'done' according to the tool. Worried about damage this may cause the bike shop recommended new chains, new gears, new everything - especially when he found out what we were planning to do. We wouldn't have any of that, but were still discouraged and a little ...

Aran Islands

Today we had our boat ride over to the Aran Islands. These islands consist of 3 different Islands, and we were going to the largest Island- Inishmore. It was about a 30 minute drive from Galway to catch the ferry. The town the ferry left from looked very run down, but luckily the ferry boat was pretty nice. The boat was full and it was about a 45 minute trip to the island.
Upon arrival to the island ...

The Burren, Galway

... on the cave tour. Although The Burren has many caves and caverns, this is the only one available for touring. Before we went down in the cave, we received a brief on the attributes of the cave, to include water located on each side of the path. Low and behold, once we were in the cave I got distracted taking pictures and stepped right off the side of the narrow path and into the water. I then had a wet foot the rest of the tour, which some people ...

Bunratty Castle, Cliffs of Mohr, O'Connell's Pub

Today was our drive from Killarney to the small coastal town of Doolin. The first stop was the Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. The Bunratty Castle was established in the 900's as a Viking settlement and had passed through many prominent lords over the centuries. The park is now set up to mirror how the Irish lived during the previous ages and the grounds have small thatched cottages, a schoolhouse, church, and the castle itself. The park ...

Quote of the month

I forgot to quote Max on something truly worth mentioning.... We were walking back from Salthill in Galway and I was freeeezing. So I said brrr, I'm an icy pole. Max's response to this was... "does that mean I get to lick you up and down".... Guess you had to be there, but pretty funny all the same...

Midnight Laundry

... afternoon. Looks like she'll be hired. A fast food job is nothing to aspire to (I refuse to go there) but at least she'll have a job while she looks for a better one. How come I'm the only one left jobless when I have the best qualifications? After Katherine got off work, we hung out at the hostel and talked to Joe and Andy. Then they all went off to a pub. I decided that what I needed most was some solo time, so I ...
