... looking for a place to stay for the night, this was difficult. I wanted to stay at a B&B so we went to a couple of the addresses on our map. None of them existed. We finally just decided to get a room at the Chateau Nova, a place we'd walked right by a whole bunch of times on the way to old town. After a long trip I think we deserved our relaxation time in the steam room and cheese/crackers/chianti combo, don't you?
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada starlagurl... Most of it was not paved, but we were informed by many signs on the roadside that Canada was working on it. "Canada is making Canada more beautiful. Because really, who else is going to do it?"<br><br>So after about an hour of driving through beautiful lakes and hills with lots of lilypads and stuff, we found ourselves at a stop sign. This is the END OF CANADA and all there is, is a stop sign? You've got to be kidding me. Talk about anti-climactic... We took a photo anyway. <br><br>We ...
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada starlagurl... 62*39 degrees north. This lake has a soft sandy shallow shore. It is a Territorial park for boaters and campers. I bet the trail views were exquisite - if we had the extra hour, we would have hiked it. The water was cool but clear and refreshing. Swimming felt like a baptism to the northern nature. *** For dinner I had Cajun fried pickerel from Great Slave Lake!
Prelude Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada lolly... d love to golf here, can you imagine golfing all night in the midnight sun? We probably wont have time this go around but it's fun to think about anyway. I feel like such a tourist but there seems so much to be touristy about - photos, postacrds, native art, northern light paraphenalia, arctic parkas, dream catchers, diamonds... We saw a kid on a bike with an antler sticking out of his backpack - it's soooo territorial!
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada lolly... racers doing the wrong sequence of trails. Heartbreaking for these junior kids. I'll bet the coaches are going to be extra carefull outlining the courses for the rest of the meet. Tuesday: Sprint Day. Great race course here. 500m for midgets and 750m for the Juveniles and Juniors. Qualifiers went off without a hitch. The quarter finals and semi finals, however... as with a lot of sprint races, didn't go off as well. Lots ...
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada hcb... by myself at night in Bangkok or Sydney. I had a positive attitude and expectation that people are basically good and kind. When I left, I said I am not getting any younger nor is the world going to be getting any safer, so I better go now. I return saying I am indeed not any younger now! but the world is not as scary as I thought it was going to be which is not a bad trade-off. So thank you to all the angels and helpful people I met, and thank you ...
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada lecklund... ran fine on regular gasoline. One cannot launch onto this road without reading the information panels posted at the start of the Dempster. It was reassuring that the various cautions were not as dire as on the Dalton Highway. As a result of the information, I taped the mosquito screen which I normally use to cover the opening in my sunroof, over the grill of my Volvo. Apart from flying stones damaging windshields, they also have the potential of piercing a car ...
Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, Canada lobo... gravel) part of the Mackenzie Highway did not quite produce the same effect as the Liard Highway for several reasons. There was more traffic which largely removed the sense of isolation which made the Liard exciting. The road bed was also not as good as the Liard Highway which made driving a little less enjoyable since it required a bit more attention to road conditions. The three major attractions along the route are the crossing of ...
