On Sunday, with the convention pretty much over for us, we rode up to Cass, WV, to ride the Cass Scenic Railroad, one of the premier scenic train rides in the country. Cass operates with Shay steam locomotives, having 7 in their livery, the most of any railroad in the country. ... skied the easier route while I took the Widowmaker, my first time on a black diamond. I waited until no one else was on the slope and headed down, slaloming to keep my speed down. Being a Saturday, the busiest day, we spent the day at Silver Creek, which has a lot less people than the main Snowshoe skiing area. The slopes are also a little easier here, so it provided an opportunity for the both of us to brush up on ...

    Treacherous Drive in the Snow

A travel blog entry by jmpncsu on Jan 25, 2013

This past weekend, Sandy and I headed up to Snowshoe, WV for a ski weekend. Although this winter has been very unpredictable with a roller coaster ride of weather, we lucked out and had good skiing weather. Not so much for the drive up. It started lightly snowing almost immediately after we left the Raleigh area and was getting heavy and sticking by the time we crossed into Virginia, making the drive take a lot longer than normal. Particularly ...

Its some 1,500 miles from Arlington to Austin. Where to go on Day 1? With no criteria except that it not be too far and the ride be interesting, I was dithering between Charleston and Roanoke when I got an email from Anne Bailey -- "... you've got to come to Amherst VA right now and take some pictures of the campaign ... " . If you know Anne you can be sure she will have found something worthwhile. ...
