Departure Day - Part 1: Transactions and Tokens

... What, in essence, this coin represents is the continuation of the journey; a reminder that there are still many more miles to cover.

The last night in Appleby was a quiet family affair, Food, Wine and a movie from my childhood ('The Last Starfighter' - good choice Joanna!) and we are now just killing time until 2pm when it will be time to set off for Geordieland and my date with density ... er, I mean destiny ... ... I think!

Wind as well as rain!

... Riding down through Cumbria the amount of rivers that had burst their bank & surface water on the roads was staggering and really confirmed that we had made a good decision.

Currently, we are all sitting in the kitchen with Anne, Phillip and their two children Ieuan & Elise having stuffed our faces with home made lasagne & apple crumble claimed to be all of work of Phil our host!.. the look on Anne's face might mean he was exagerating some what!

Englands largest Lake just got bigger!

... town. We were able to drive the Ambleside and Crook and saw some of the stunning country side. Many stone cottages and fences, lovely valleys and hills. Unfortunatley it was not the weather for any walking which is one of the main attractions of the area.
Had a very relaxing weekend and a stunning meal at Postillion resturant. 28 years! where has it gone.

After the Storm

... across a couple of boggy fields and muddy stiles until it started to rise. The last few hundred yards towards the top of Latterbarrow felt like they went straight up. Fortunately, the view wasn't bad.

Due to time constraints, we said our goodbyes at this point and the rest of the party headed off into the distance. We took a different route back down, through some stony sheep ...

Best Laid Plans

... churning streams and modified our route. The back road to Little Langdale took us around in a circle. It circumvented Little Langdale Tarn. The entire route wouldn't be more than 2-3 miles, but in our present state, that was quite far enough. The road was flooded in places - easily calf deep. Eartha avoided the worst of it, by walking along the top of a dry stone wall (dry? Ha!) while I made a foolhardy dash for it through the flood. Needless to say I got even ...

Up Periscope!

The rain came down in sheets. There were gusts of wind that blew clouds of water across the motorway. The night was pitch black and spray from the road surface obscured the tail-lights of the cars infront. Many cars had their fog lights on to try to cut through the storm.

The rain beat continuously on the windscreen. I started to wonder how many thudding drops glass needs before it starts to ...

Day 5 - 404 miles in 3 AA Tow Trucks

Tow truck 2, turns up at 15:29 and we are off again for the next leg of the journey, Stirling Services to Lancaster Services. This journey takes around 4 hours and I have a nice chat with the driver, Jim all the way. We phone ahead and arrange the next tow truck to meet us at Lancaster at 19:15, guess what? Yes, it wasn't there and I am told it won't be there until 20:15 and it finally arrives at 20:30

Lancaster to Hest Bank via Tarleton and Glasson

... pausing for tea at a new cafe, followed by scampi at the Lantern o'er the Lune Cafe.
We visited the smokehouse while we were not hungry, so that we didn't buy too much! As it was good weather in the afternoon we went to the boatyard for some fuel - YES a real diesel pump that put fuel directly into our tank! We then continued back up the Glasson flight of locks, on the way giving a short boat trip to a family from Cambridge. We headed north again at the top of ...

... of the lake and I strolled around for 10 minutes or so. I assume that was Windermere, but I am not sure. I upload a few picture from there and if you know where it is, please tell me. Anyway, on our way back, we dropped by Lakeside Motor Museum. I was not interested antique cars exhibited in the museum, but John really was.
